does it have hardware transparancy by chance? It's actually very useful (sounds like it wouldn't be) but it's still hit or miss on linux. Each time I get a new videodriver it either runs amazing or I have to disable it.

I'm still stuck on win 2k at work. But were suppose to get xp soon. I was considering upgrading my laptop to Vista. They sent out the msdn subscribers cd's a while ago. MY latop is my only windows machine because i use it for work.

microsoft about to dis window xp, it mean they will not support window xp any more. no more path to fix problem or virus. 64bit is way to go now.

I don't think so, they will support XP for a few years yet. They are just now going to discontinue support for Windows 2000 by like 2007 I belive.

xp sp1, 98, me, 98se just got end of support cycle as of july 11th 2006 i think.

XP sp2 will continue to be supported for quite some time. 2000 is EOL'ed end of this year I think in favor of 2003 server and xp sp2.

Also not sure what the big deal with 64 bit is.. Most poeple aren't going to see any effects from it.. It doesn't make it faster. It makes the chip footprint slightly larger, also executables tend to be a bit more bloated. I see no reason to leave 32 bit for the average computer unless you are doing scientific calculations or need a crazy amount of ram. But someone please if you can rationally justify the need I'm open for opinions.

But yes if you live in the windows world you want to make your way towards vista.

Out of curiosity can you also tilt windows on a z axis (like depth wise?). I'm trying to figure out all you can do with it. I use xgl on linux and I can tilt, x, y, z and rotate on a cube. I'm curious to see what they have implemented for vista and didn't get mine installed yet.

64-bit is the best for 3D modeling, high intensity programming, and gaming (when they come out with 64-bit games). The average user doesn't see any of the 'power' because the average user doesn't do that kind of stuff.

The only time the average user will see better performance with the 64-bit architecture is when virus scanners, such as Norton, start taking advantage of it. It will provide better security,

FYI, Windows XP 64Bit is not supported by Microsoft.

Vista is ok, that's all I can say. I've installed multiple version on mulitple computers and it ran slow, then good, then slow again... jsut back and forth. Early versions had lots of crashes (expected), but from stupid things. Computers are now shipped with the "Designed for XP and Vista" logos on them, but more than half of them won't be able to handle it. All those cheap ass $400 notebooks and desktops with the Intel Celeron, AMD Sempron, and Celeron D will not run Vista. It will be so slow that it won't even be funny. A graphics card is also highly needed for Vista, and these notebooks and desktops that come with crappy integrated shared video memory won't be able to handle anything, no matter how much RAM you have.

i just got 3 keys and am downloading the ISO as we speak... will let you know how it works on a Centrino 1.73 with 512 DDR using the x86 platform...

Im agree with you davis, that why I like to build pc myself, my 1k pc can beat 3k alienware pc. I just find out vista beta 2 still have alot bug ( but better then the first beta ), just format it and reinstall 64bit pro.

I dont think that pc will run vista at full. But good luck with that. Go tweakvista.com. check it out.

actually the ones that say for vista will run it. You don't need a graphics card. You do if you want to run aero. But it will run in reduced functionality mode with a resemblence similar to 2k just fine. So they are rigth in putting that on the case. It will run it just not fully. Kinda like XP with all the graphical stuff disabled.

David- I understand your 3d modeling claims completely, also with complex software done for calculations. Workstations have been 64 bit for some time (the computer next to me is my sparc ultra 10 from 99ish), I still think it's a big marketing scam for the average user. when my ex was looking for a laptop for college they kept pushing her toward the 64 bit one which was about 300-400 dollars more. She ended up with a celeron and uses it to run work and AOL (which is all 90% of users do).

I suppose that for games you could do better calculations for accuracy and collision detection, but other then for the underlying purposes it shouldn't really be aparent to the end user (I don't think)

I can't comment on the virus scanner part, so I don't know if it does indeed help with security (I can't off the top of my head think why it would, but having no justification for that, so I won't argue). My windows boxen do not touch the internet in any shape or form. I have it to run Visual studio 2k5 and thats about it. I don't have to run one on solaris or linux so I can't comment on the usage of 32 vs 64 bit and job run times.

killer - completely agree with building the pc yourself thing. I sit on a dual dual amd 64 x2 as I we speak (read 4 cores), with 2 gigs of ram. Something like this can't be bought as cheap as I built it. I priced it close to 10k when I was looking around. Ended up being able to construct it myself for close to 4k. My only complaint is the price of the graphics card. They cost more then the cpu's did (opteron x2's aren't cheap!) 2 nvidia quadro fx card's. It's very nice (I havn't used it for games yet or anything :/ ) but it works great for rendering!

Note: I do integration and simulation work for a living, so yes I can actually justify the machines I own and it's not just for show... but the case is http://www.novaslp.net/pics/v/random...01710.jpg.html
