to replace the rear main seal does the oil pan have to be removed
I ask because i took my 2000 Chevy Z71 5.3L in to get oil leak fix
they called and told me it was leaking from the oil pan and they fixed it for $425
they put it back together and call me and told me it was leaking from the rear main seal too they want $900 to replace rear main seal
I told them to use a uvlight to find leak when i took it in the first time
got the bill and there no uvlight on the paperwork

Sounds like they are taking you for a ride.
I would pin them down and see if they actully checked it out or run the leak dye test like you asked for.
It would be very odd for a oil pan and rear main to both be leaking and not very likely for a rear main seal to leak.
They should have done like you told them in the first place and used the engine oil dye and uvlight.
With out proper testing they will not know where the leak is.
It could even be on upper part of engine and running down on rear main seal area.
The rear main seal can be replaced by removing the transmission and flywheel.
It is on the back of the engine. I do not think the oil pan has to come off for a rear main seal.
Average labor on a oil pan is 2-4 hrs.
Average labor on a trans. R&R 4-6 hrs
900$ is a little high and very high if it is not actually the rear main leaking.
