Exclamation Clicking/clanking

I get a clicking/clanking noise when I turn not all the time but about 70% of the time. I have tried to track the problem and cannot find anything, everything is tight. I just replaced both wheel bearings and both axleshafts today and the noise still exists.

Any ideas?

Re: Clicking/clanking

Kinda sounds like a cv joint. Maybe a bad strut mount or a broken coilspring?
I also just replaced my engine mounts. They popped on turns also. Mostly when I let up on gas in a turn or gave it gas coming out of a turn.
Hope I was able to help.

Re: Clicking/clanking

Did you do those CV's because you had the clickety-clank?

Re: Clicking/clanking

Well orginally I did, when I replaced the passengerside last summer with a new one and replaced the drvierside with a good used one. Then last saturday I was out wheelin, and spun the CV on the driverside (all the bearings went flyingm left me in 2 wheel drive...lol) So went home and replaced both of them with new ones.

Re: Clicking/clanking

So you've had 2 sets of CV's, the noise has been around since last summer, and the first set didn't make it go away?

Re: Clicking/clanking

yes 2 sets, first set (one was new one was used) and the new set just replaced last saturday (both new). Did not help either time and it's really starting to get annoying,

I have tried to put it on jackstands: Start the jeep and put it in DRIVE while turning the wheel from lock to lock and could not get it to repeat it.

Re: Clicking/clanking

So it's not a random noise while rolling along, it's something happening on a repeatable interval?

Re: Clicking/clanking

Ok but what I was digging at is when it happens was it something that was so repeatable it occurred every one tire rotation?

But it's a when I back out of the driveway noise. So while it happens every time you back out of the driveway you might then be able to drive 50 feet before you made a turn and it didn't happen until you turned? If so I'm thinking you can rule out any part of the drivetrain that turns in some way to make the vehicle move forward or back.

The noise is from up front or in back?

You got a busted shock?

Re: Clicking/clanking

Forgive us, we're all jus' trying to help

Is it in the act of turning (rotation of the steering wheel) or the rotation of the wheel while turned? Also a curiousity, what's the steering damper look like?

Re: Clicking/clanking

The shocks are brand new just replaced in Febuary. The noise is coming from the front.

Yes, it only happens when driving and turning, sitting still turning the wheel back and forth it's hard to get it to repeat but has happened on occasion, but it happen more frequently while driving and turning.

Re: Clicking/clanking

have you checked tie rods and ends. also the rack and pinion steering unit could be bad. do you have to turn wheel completly or just a little. If wheel goes lock to lock then it could be problem in steeriing rack unit. how is steering fluid level? rack could have a crack in it and pops when steering preasure is aplied internal. had this problem on my caddy. replaced rack and problem solved. all noises dissappeared. shocks are new but could be cracked at the mounting area too. metal popping under steering load.

Re: Clicking/clanking

All the steering linkage was replaced about a year ago and are greased regularly with oil changes.

Steerign gear, has been replaced numorous times, due to steering play, I replaced with a used one that I got from a parts jeep, replaced with reman one from autozone, then replaced with a brand new ARG Super Gear 2, then finally bought one off ebay used from a 98 grand cherokee , which has been the best one of all of them = had the least amount of play. In all these gear, I got the same clunking noise..

It only does it while turning and moving forward (speed doesn't matter, but turnning radius does - at full turn or very close to full turn is when it happens.

lil history on this mysterious klunk.
First I used to get 1 klunk whenever I turned onto a street which was going up a hill. Replaced all the steering linkage (Tie Rod, Ends, and Drag Link) then replaced both upper and lower balljoints on both side, none of that helped still got that klunk. Then my tires were getting worn pretty bad, so I went to have it aligned they told me my wheel bearings were bad and couldn't do the alignment until replace, so I replaced them, now this is when I started to get this very annoying clinking/clanking noise when turning. upon removing the hub/bearing assembly, I seen the passengerside CV boot was ripped, didn't worry about it just yet, put the hub/bearing and everything back together. and noticed the clinking/clanking. ehh figured prolly disturbed that CV since the boot was ripped and got dirt and such in it, so I tore it down, cleaned it all up, put back together, put new boot and greased, put all back together and still got the noise. So I went ahead and replaced the axleshaft with a new one, still got the noise, so thought maybe it's coming from the driverside, so I got a good used one from another jeep, didn't help - still got the noise. well tried to track it all last summer, finally gave up on it. Then a few weeks ago decided to try and track the problem down again. removed the axleshaft (big no no)_and tried to drive without them, woops big mistake, hub fell apart - apparently the axleshaft hold the 2 halfs of the hub/bearing assembly together....lol oo well lesson learned, then replaced both hub/bearing assemblies again (about a month ago) with new ones. and last weekend was out wheelin' and spun an axleshaft. on my way home stopped at the part store got 2 new one and replaced them both - did not help, still get the noise and it'
s very annoying - and that where we are 2day.

I also replace all the shocks. Trackbar. Swaybar end links and mount bushings.

Re: Clicking/clanking

A friend had a noise that sounded like a wheel bearing or something coming from the rear wheel - it turned out to be the parking brake shoe/assembly.
Just a thought.
