Car Newbie Radio Question
I just recently had an aftermarket radio (Sony) installed on my 98 4Runner... After it was done, I noticed that there was a static sound (only when the volume was on). The guy said that it is because I have an aftermarket radio but I don't believe him... I think he wired it poorly...
I was wondering whether or not it is because it is aftermarket or whether or not to try to fiddle with it myself (anybody know where to go b/c that installdr website doesn't have 98 on there and it looks completely different from how he took it off and I don't want to have to pay for that other website if it is no good) or if I should go to someone else... Thanks EDIT: Weird thing I just found out... The static occurs only when the engine is on... I can turn the car on to just electrical and there is no static coming from the speakers... Only when the engine is on... :-\ Last edited by triscuitbiscuit; 06-10-2006 at 12:01 PM. |

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
When listening to AM does the static change with the engine speed?

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
I will check, but when FM and CD are on, the static increases in frequency as the engine speed increases...

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
Sounds to me like you have "alternator whine". Sometimes, it's just a poor ground that does it. Others, it's the actuall equipment that's been put in. No way of telling which cars such things will happen to ahead of time, either. So...It may not necissarily be the installer's fault, but being an installer myself....I'd sure as hell want to get rid of it. Wouldn't want it in my car, I can't imagine a customer wanting it in theirs. I'd say try to re-ground the radio first. Usually, that does the trick. I'll be up front with you though....alternator whine is one of the hardest things to totally get rid of.

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
There are noise suppressors available for alternators. Radio Shack may have one available.

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
Even though this just happened with this radio? The radio before it (factory-unit) didn't have this static noise... Maybe I'll try to go to Best Buy or Circuit City and try to get them to look at it under the table...
EDIT: I was reading up on alternator noise throughout the internet and it seems very much like the problem... I was thinking he did a sloppy job and definately think it is reversible... |

Re: Car Newbie Radio Question
I had a similar problem with my alpine. What the problem was, was the ground was connected to the same metal as other electrical equip. (for me, the directionals). Bring it to Best Buy and have them change the ground.
