WIP: Ducati GP5

I figured I would get this one started, though the title should have really been research in progress.

I was looking through my '05 Pitwalk the other night and out of all the bikes, I thought this one would be an entertaining project. The changes are pretty subtle, but noticable enough to make it interesting. The only area that I do not have enough photographic reference of is the lower portion of the swing arm and the shock mounting. If anyone has some pictures, or reference drawings that could be of help, I would greatly appreciate it. I know there has to be something out there, but all my searches come up with nothing of use.

My next step will be an outline of the changes, list of aftermarket parts I will be using and parts I will be making. Then onto some progress with pic's.

Dave

Re: WIP: Ducati GP5

Hi Dave

Wow.. this sounds very good anyhow i hope to see the progress and hope too not to see a future release of other mark... because we saw the 04 Ducati from Tamiya... but maybe someone is doing the same version as you ( for the example... i know that someone had started the M1 05 and Tamiya will release it soon) anyhow i decided to make models of minor importance (but real) for not to see other people doing the same.

Anyhow i hope to see you updates of this big red bullet

Good luck!

Roca

Re: WIP: Ducati GP5

Hey Roca,

I know the feeling of dissapointment when you put time into something and have to scrap it because someone else does it while you are still in progress. But I have no feelings on that for this build, it is just me building for my and hopefully your enjoyment.

I started my list today. Funny how subtle differences turn into a page long list. Everytime I looked at a picture, I would add something more and it just kept growing. Of course, I might have over done it on some of the details, but what can I say, I'm a detail hound.

I did find my answer on the swing arm and shock assembly. It was as simple as looking at the '04 assembly. Even though the Works bikes had a completely different swing arm in '05, the suspension assembly was the same. That was a bit of a relief. I think the rest of the changes will not be all that bad either, except for the front caliper assemblies, which are completely different than the previous years. That will be a real joy.

Anyway, just a few more things to go over and I will get started on it.

Dave

Mmm, this smells interesting in my modelling nose ;-)
Great project Dave! You go ahead and take it slow. Great that the suspension was the same (pew...)! In what way does the 05 calipers different? I don't have the energy to get my Pitwalks out...

Re: WIP: Ducati GP5

Hey Joel,

The suspension was a big relief. Subtle differences are hard to work with just looking at pictures, most of them you can get by with, but some of them make all the difference in the world. The suspension is a critical point, but if you can't see what you are dealing with, its pretty hard to replicate. A problem I encountered on the '04 Pro Link, but once I found a line drawing, it all made sense.

The calipers are quite different than the ones used on the other bikes, more of a machined block, but they have a small radius that the Brembo letters follow. The others have the letters straight across, though I can cut the Brembo decals apart to accomplish that. Getting the right look of the caliper will be hard, especially that small.

I forgot the list at home, so I will post that tomorrow night and then get some pictures up in the next couple of days.

Dave
