struts.......HELP!!

my del sol is getting coilovers put on it and they said that the rear struts have rusted and fallin apart.... they said they might be able to use the broken ones but it is not a good idea

do you know if i need good struts or if i should get new ones

they might just be tryin to skrew me out of some money my cars a 94 and i wouldnt think the struts would decompose

If you have coilovers you would probably blow out the stock struts mighty fast.

i know a couple of people who have had there stock struts for a while and they havent had a problem so im not worried about that

i would plain and simply tell them SHOW ME any reputable place will gladly take the strut out or walk you back to your car to show you.

in my experience of owning several honda's over the last 7-8 years...struts don't rust and fall apart in the sense of you get a hole in the side of the car and it's eaten away like cancer until it's brittle. i don't know how it is on the east coast. a good example is the last set of struts i took out of my car. noticed they were leaking when changing my brakes. ordered some tokico blues and they came 2 weeks later. by that time the old struts had decompressed. they were done. i had driven on them no problems other than a rough ride.

with that said...i would ask them to show me what they thought was the problem. if you're not sure what they are showing you is truly bad, take it to another place for a 2nd opinion and see what they say

Struts dont rust and fall apart. They'll leak out all the oil in them and go dry, essentially being dead, but it sounds like that guy is feeding you some BS.

He's right in saying you should replace them however, especially if you are going with coilovers. For that matter, if you replace the springs at all with new ones, you should replace the shocks unless they are relatively new, otherwise you cn kiss those coilovers goodbye in a matter on a few months, and the car will also ride like crap while you're tearing up your new parts.

Also, since you are going with coilovers, I'd recommend you not use Tokico blues. They are too low pressure and will be dead in under 1 year unless you are extremely careful to avoid bumps, potholes, etc.

While it's more expensive, go with Koni Yellows or Bilsteins. the results will be much better and will last much longer.
