Code 35 and Fan is always running

I have a 94 Caravan which has a code 35 - Open or shorted condition detected in the radiator fan low speed relay circuit. When I key the ignition the fan comes on? I don't even start the engine. I found that if I disconnect the Low Pressure AC pressure switch the fan shuts off. Remember I have not even started the engine! I have replaced the AC pressure switch which did not fix the problem. Is the fan suppose to come on before the engine is started? My belief is the fan should only come when the water temp is high enough and/or the AC is on while the engine is RUNNING! I pulled and tested all the relays in the power distribution box which all tested OK. If someone here has experience with this problem please post possible solutions.

Sounds to me like you need a new radiator fan relay. Now, if your 1994 van is anything like my 1998 van, the radiator fan relay is NOT in the relay box. It is bolted to the radiator support somewhere near the radiator. Search this forum for my post on this subject. If the 1994 van is different from the 1998 van with respect to the radiator fan relay, I hope someone else out there can direct you as to where to find this relay.

I have a new Radiator Fan (1 month old)

1996 Model year was a redesign year which changed many systems on the Dodge/Chrysler minivans. 94-95 Minivans were interchangable. The 94-95 uses relays in the fuse box under the hood to control fan operation. I have switched the relays and it did nothing to fix the code 35.

Well, if the fan is brand new and you know for sure the relay is good, then the only other place to look is the wiring. Insulation can crack and connections can separate or come loose. Time to get out the ohm-meter and do some troubleshooting.

I am not that experienced with the 1995 and earlier vans. Once had a 1989 Grand Caravan until we bought the 1998. I sure wish I had that van back. It has much more legroom in the driver's seat then the 1996 and newer vans. At 6'-4", I will take the legroom over the turning radius any day. But the van is my wife's car, so I get overruled.

This is a problem that I chased for several years in my 94'.. I would get some time...look into it, get frustrated and then move on. I finally noticed that if I disconnected the sensor in the A/C line, to the left of the radiator, the fan would shut off, this is the sensor that turns the fan to high if the R134 temp is to high coming out of the condenser. I replaced that switch and the fan problem was gone and it cycled properly like it should. The switch is on a schrader valve (like a bicycle tire) and will not leak coolant when removed, I can't remember right off the top of my head but I believe the switch was about $30.00......hope this is your problem.......good luck

Code 35...Radiator fan relay An open or shorted condition detected in the high or low speed radiator fan relay circuit.


Test the A/C Pressure switch for continuity. This switch, according to the wiring diagram is normally OPEN...if yours is closed it will provide a ground path for the relay/s and turn the fan on right away. It appears that you are getting a ground shot from somewhere that you shouldnt have.
You say that with the switch disconnected the fan stops...have you waited a bit(for coolant temp to rise) to see if the fan kicks on normally with the pressure switch disconnected?
