1998 Jimmy runs -- then stalls

My 1998 Jimmy starts, then runs normally for between hour and two hours. Then the engine quits -- this can happen at anytime, on the road or idling, but usually after i let up on the accelerator.

Car will not restart for about 5 minutes. Then PRESTO! Engine restarts and it runs fine -- usually for rest of day without problems.

Over past four days, this problem got worse, and the time between engine stalls got shorter, finally to the point where the car only goes for couple of miles before stalling. Engine restart time is also taking longer.

This happened before, about six months ago. Changed fuel filter and problem seemed to clear up. Started again two months ago and has worsened steadily.

Related or not?? I removed the air cleaner assembly and the air filter was completely clean -- i changed it six months ago??

Re: 1998 Jimmy runs -- then stalls

Welcome to the forum!

Is the "Service Engine Soon" light on? If so, what codes are present? How many miles are on the (fuel pump in particular) vehicle?

With the symptoms you have given, it's possible the fuel pump is failing. Replacing the fuel filter, (as you did) on a vehicle with a weak pump, may have bought you some time. Monitoring fuel pressure when the stall occurs would tell if this is the case. A faulty fuel pump will not trigger the "SES" light.
