Ducati 999

Hey guys, new to the motorcycle section here. I am 17 an about to start riding, I originally was going to buy a newer gsxr-600, but I came across this local ad that has a 03 Ducati 999-perfect condition apparently from the owner. Said I could get it for $4500, this seemed like a steal, am I wrong or what? Pictures look great i'll pst a link if I have to. Just would like some feedback on this. It is not the S or R, just 999 but looks so nice!

1)at that price it sounds to good to be true and 2) that's a lot of bike to start off on.

ya, both points that were going through my head! I know its alot of bike, but I did learn how to ride a street bike on a 954....either way I think I'll buy it an then sell it. If truly in good condition, what should I sell it for? 12?

Sounds to good to be true. Make sure it's not a salvage title and the person selling actually is the owner and is straight up. I agree that it's a lot of bike for a beginner. There are a lot of experianced riders that get themselves into trouble too. If a buy and sell for the kind of profit works it's a great idea. You can go get your 600 which is a great all around size for beginner and fun for an experianced rider as well. You won't get tired of the 600 anytime soon.

Thanx ya i dont plan on getting tired of the 600 anytime soon. I started on dirtbikes an some 250's were a bit mean for me lol. But I'll let you guys know whats goin on with the bike, im goin to check it out...any help on things I should check on the bike an where they are located, I have no experience with Ducati.

be careful of scams like this could be.

they post a picture of a bike which is popular and a price which is to good to be true. they then do a couple of things. the most popular now is they pay for shipment. only as they go to send it theres a red tape problem. they ask you to pay for shipment by direct debit but post you a dud cheque to cover cost. they keep your cash and thats it scam over.

don't buy unless you can see it and then do checks on theft and so on.


even if you do get it, it'll be a sweet ride to look at but you may not enjoy the ride. its a special beast that needs to be ridden properly. and what if you drop it

i wouldnt bother with that bike, is there a big fancy brown house in the background. if there is he was trying to sell a 97 748 in mint condition for 2500cdn. its a scam. beautiful bike though. have you heard one running. been close enough to here the dry clutch. sounds like the bike is falling apart, terrible noise. thats probably the only bad thing i could say about the bike besides the price tags.

The Ducati's are very high maintenance. The noise you hear is the lifters which need a lit of maintenance due to the design. They need to be replaced or shimmed as normal maintenance.

All false.

I put over 50k miles on my Ducati before selling it and never had 1 single failure of any kind, and the valves we're within spec at every adjustment interval. Aside from that, nothing but regular maintenance was performed as would be standard with any bike.

The noise you hear that sounds like the engine is about to give is the dry clutch. This is completely normal.

Ducati's use desmodromic valvetrains which use a rocker arm to open and close the valves. There are no lifters!

Well maybe you have your answer. Maybe they were trying to pull a fast one. People are constantly getting creative on scams. Not actually saying this is because there may be a good reason for the non-reply, but doubtful.
