The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
Holy shit guys, I am so excited. I ordered brakes, two carbide burs, and my head is getting worked on. I was just waiting for one of them to get here to start working on the Talon becaues at the moment theres nothing I can do. Well, the burs came today. www.carbideburs.com Very cheap, fairly quick shipping. The two burs I got cost less than one if I ordered from Napa. My brother comes running down and says, "You got a package, look what happened to it though." So I look at it... the bubble mailer got run over and had a big ass hole in the bottom! I really dont care, I got my burs so I'm happy, but damn! So now I gotta buckle down for the long haul, I am going to be spending all my free time at the shop porting my o2 sensor housing, turbo hotside, and intake/exhuast manifolds. I should be able to get my head on Thursday so as soon as I get done with that other stuff, I can go to work gasket matching the head. Then my brakes should be here on Friday or Monday. Then all I need is a couple belts and I'm set! I am setting a goal, as long as I get all my shit, I want to be on the road by Friday next week. Wish me luck guys! I'll post pictures of the porting tonight. I think the exhaust manifold is up first. The turbo hole is ported like a bitch already but the runners are still stock. My gasket has huge ass runner holes, I doubt I'll go out that far, but I will take 'er out a bit anyway. This will be my official Talon update page for the reassembly. Mmmmmm, I can already taste the victory cigar...

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
More good news. The back pads got here today when I was at the shop porting. Also, the head is going to be done tomorrow, I may go pick it up or have it shipped (2.5 hours away). I also started on porting today. Who ever said porting wasnt fun and takes too long was a liar
. I actually didnt mind it too bad. I was out there for about 4.5 hours and did the o2 sensor housing, though I couldnt get at it all due to lack of bits/sizes (did it all with one bit), started on the WG flapper hole (need to read the vfaq again) and I did 3 runners on the exhuast manifold. The o2 housing is ported pretty good and the runners are noticeably bigger, but I didnt want to run out of casting. All in all, a good day. Pics coming, I have to go to work.Edit: And fuck you guys on the 2g thing! Everyone knows 1g's are WAYYYY better than 2g's .

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
You are a crazy bastard, I dont like anything with a V style engine.
The 2gb and 1ga are really close, but I like the sleek looks of a 2gb better than the sharpness of the 1ga. Evos are right behind, mostly because they are 4 door (the would be gay 2 doors though) and I cant afford one. 92's, 2gb's and 3000gt/stealths are back there, I dont like them much, but I wouldnt mind them either. Then theres the 93-94's, the second biggest mitsu fuck up. They look like fat 1ga's... ugly and 7 bolts. Gah. Theres my break down of the DSM related cars. |

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
I just thought I would update you guys on my progress. I finally have everything I need to get the car on the road except the cams. I dont know when they will be here and the people I got them from have really shitty communication so I think I will just put the stockers back in until the FP2's come. I did a bunch of porting today and the last couple days I was out there. I finished up the o2 sensor housing and exhaust manifold today and got a really good start on the turbo. I went to work today on the step on the exhaust turbine inlet today. MAN that is a bitch! I am almost done though, probably like 45 minutes of grinding and like a half hour of sanding to smooth some bumps. Then I still have to do the main part of the exhaust turbine outlet and the head left. Hopefully I can get the rest of the turrbo done in like 2.5 hours and the head should take too long. The exhaust ports need to come out a bit, but I dont think I am going to do the intake side. I would only be able to take it out a little less than mm all the way around because of the gasket I have so I figured why bother. The rough intake side helps atomization anyway. The exhaust can be backed out a good amount and It will need to be seeing how massively ported the o2 sensor housing and exhaust manifold is. Porting fucking sucks.
I got the back brakes done today and put my new 300zx rims on. They are acutally pretty ugly, but thats ok. They are wide as fuck, thats all I care about. The fronts are almost done, I just need the pads. The EBC's I bought arent for 2g AWD, actually they fit my 1g AWD brackets. So I looked on EBC's website, they fit a pretty wide variety of DSM's. Check the classifieds. I started prep work to the block for the head to go on it. I read somewhere to use a gasket scraped and emery cloth. What is emery cloth? Like a green scrub pad? Becuase thats what I am using and its workin pretty good. Right now, I am shooting for saturday being the startup day. All I need is oil, exhaust manifold bolts, front pads (just getting stock like ones), a new victory cigar (my case broke on the other one) and a couple belts and she'll be ready to rumble. I have to work from 11 to about 7 then I have to go run at 7 for 9 miles. I dont know if I'm going to want to run after 8 hours of standing, but we'll see. If I dont run, I will finish porting the turbo and do the head tomorrow. I have Wednesday off and that will be Talon day. I am going to go out there at like 8 and start getting shit together. Then I should just need another night to double check everything and finish up last minute stuff and hopefully she'll run. Shit never goes right though, so after working on it from 3pm on she should run. I cant wait to go cruising in that beast, I will finally be able to keep up! Driving the Cavy in a group of a WRX, S2000, V6 Tiburon, SRT 4, crazy turbo'd Neon, a pretty quick Civic hatch, and a few other cars with slightly more power than the Cavy is pretty depressing! |

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
Yeah, word. Pics are coming, I will take a bunch tomorrow. I didnt work on it today, I figured 14+ hours out there tomorrow will be enough. Depending on what time I go to bed I will wake up at either 7 or 8 and head out, break for lunch and get some parts, break for supper and get more parts, then work until midnight or so. I am pretty excited, if everything goes extremely well I could start her up tomorrow. If it goes good I could start it up on thursday and if it goes bad it will be friday or saturday. I only have like a half hour on the exhaust turbine inlet, probably a hour and a half on the exhaust turbine outlet, then probably an hour on the head. Then I need to finish prepping the block. Assuming I start at 8, I should be ready to put the head on by 11 so I should break about then to go get the pads, belts, and exhaust manifold bolts and get the broken off bolt out of the turbo and the piece that holds the water temp sensor. Hopefully I will be able to get the head on by 1 or so, then start putting shit back on. The cams are supposed to be sent out tomorrow or the next day so I am just going to put the stockers back in for now. So conservatively I should be able to start bolting the outside shit back on by like 3 and with a half hour break for supper I should be able to get it done. If I am close, I will just keep plugging away into the night, but if its not going that good and its like 10 and I am just getting the head on, I'll just go home about midnight. I still need to get the title switched over and get insurance, but I can wait on that until it hits the streets. On Saturday the local car guys are going to a track in Saben, MN and if the Talon is ready by then, I might have to go. Wish me luck guys!

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
Thor let me know if you're going to be in Sabin on saturday. I drive by the track every weekend on my way to the lake. I think it's Tintmasters "Test 'n Tune" day at the track so I might swing out there for awhile and see what's going down. Defintely let me know if you're going to be there though, I want to see that beast in action.
And emery cloth is like a big roll of sand paper that is like an inch wide. Google it, it's some pretty good stuff. For the block, I would get like 320 grit or something around there. |

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
Alright man, I will. Yep, Tint Masters day. Theres a bunch of us going over there, a SRT4, decently modded WRX, S2000, a slammed as hell blue civic hatch with a Vtec swap (suprisingly fast), and a V6 tiburon for sure. If I can pull of some decent 60 ft times, I should be one of the quicker ones. The S2000 is a girl and IIRC, they are like high 14's stock. I think she can drive pretty well too. The WRX should be fucking the hell out of all of us, he is crazy fast I think. The SRT4 manages really high trap speeds (104 was his best last time) but it was hot last time and he sucks at driving. His best 1/4 was a high 14. The Tiburon is an auto with 17's and headers/catback so I doubt he'll be running faster than a 15. Then the Civic hatch guy should be running low 15's. When it gets together, it wont have much for power mods, just the big 16g on stock boost and the light weight underdrive pulley but I shouldnt have any problem hooking up with the 8" wide rims and Yokos. If I can shift decent I am hoping to get into the mid 14's. We'll see though. I should know by tomorrow if I am going or not, it will all depend on how much I can get done. I am going to be in bed by 12 tonight and getting up at 7 tomorrow. Wish me luck guys, I am going to need it! I need some new CD's too, that one that I played 4-5x over yesterday is getting old real fast.

Re: The Talon is coming back together... piece by piece.
Well, I am tired and dirty and still havent turned the key yet. I put in 15 hours out there today, but man I love it. All in all, I got a shit ton done today even with the little mess ups. I got the head on, cams in, intake and exhaust manifolds, turbo lines are all on (fuck water cooled turbos), fuel rail and injectors, and most of the vac lines and some sensors. All I need to do is set the timing, get the brakes setup right, plug in a few sensors, and turn it over. As I work on this car, I learn more and more about it. I bought it totally "stock." After a day, I find out its got a big 16g and a B/S removal kit. Today I was looking at the pistons. Hmmmm, why is there a .50 stamped on there next to 63DT? Probably because the are not the stock pistons but OEM replacements .50mm (~.020") oversized. That would mean its been rebuilt. I also found out the manifold I got in a package with the turbo bolts is a forced performance manifold, that was neat. So its been a good day, but a long tiring one. I am excited though, if I work on it hard tomorrow from 8-12 I should be close to ready to try to start it. Sorry Garrett, I dont think I will make it to Saben this weekend. If I had gotten the timing set, the front brakes done, and/or all the rest of the engine bay done I should be ready but I think I am going to need saturday to work on it. Man, I cant wait to launch that bastard
