Angry 97 Caravan Sensor Location Please

Good day All. Have a 97 Caravan that gives a trouble code of 15 which indicates a speed sensor needs replacing.Went to parts store and they said it has 2 speed sensors, input and output.I guessed that the output sensor is needed and bought one but cant find a sensor on transmission that looks like the one I bought. Anyone know where this sensor is located. Thanks for any help.

Re: Sensor Location Please

Not to say that it can't be the case but, I can't find any evidense that there's two Vehicle Speed Sensors (VSS). Did you check with the dealer? I'm going by a Haynes manual. It says the VSS is on the transmission housing. Big help they are. No picture either. Could your parts guys be confusing the Cam Position Sensor and Crankshaft Position Sensor with the VSS?

Edit April 09 - Disregard this bilge.

Re: Sensor Location Please

Hey RIP. I have a Haynes manual and as you mentioned just says the VSS location is on side of transmission.I went to local parts store (AdvanceAuto) and they showed me in the computer 2 speed sensors, one is called Output Speed Sensor and the other is input. There are no discriptions or pictures in the Haynes manual.I removed the air intake assembly to get to the transmission from the top and inspected from underside but I cant find the sensor. This is my wifes van and when she drives it she says the speedometer will quit working and van will loose all motor power. As of last week when 1st started acting up I checked the trouble codes and got numerous codes.Started off with upstream o2 sensor which I replaced, replaced catalytic convertor cleared codes and now only trouble code is 15 which says no vehicle speed indicated under road load conditions.

Re: Sensor Location Please

Do you see two big holes (not the trans fluid inlet and outlet to the cooler) in the picture? I think the left one is for input speed sensor. He is holding the output speed sensor right at where it goes.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Sensor Location Please

the sensor on the back of the tranny near the fire wall is a crank sensor is reads the plate on the flywheel...there is an input speed sensor and output sensor on front side of tranny looking down from right side of radiator...those two connectors look similar but do not fit the wrong sensor.

Re: Sensor Location Please

I just replaced the two speed sensors on our '99 Grand Caravan 3.3L. As cheap as the parts are I went ahead and replaced both without knowing which was bad.

The sensors are located to the right of the radiator. One is below the two tubes that carry the transmission fluid to/from the radiator and the other is below the battery. You need to remove the air cleaner to get to them (which means you first have to remove that big plastic piece that says "remove to change air filter"). They take a 1" socket to remove - $6.50 at Sears.

Despite the fact my Chilton manual (and apparently the Haynes as well) doesn't have a picture of their location they are very easy to find and change. The longest part of the job was the trip to Sears.

Re: Sensor Location Please

I confer for the locations of the sensors on my '99 Grand Caravan. The part number ending in 9 is located under the battery behind and under the air filter on the Drivers side of the vehicle. The other part ending with an 8 is to the left about 8 inches directly under the transmission hoses. Normally the sensors are white, but mine were all cruddy, so you will need to wipe them down. I paid $27.17 each at the local dealer and used a 1" socket from Sears ($10.62) and a convertor for my 3/8" ratchet. Worked like a charm. Had to remove the upper air box and the lower filter box and cover to get direct access. Once there, I got on to both and pulled them out. Very simple job and it worked! I was sweating a $2000 rebuild.
If anyone needs pictures, please e-mail me at klwood2000(remove this)@gmail.com and I will send them to you.

Re: Sensor Location Please

Thank you Radish99 and klwood2000! Your description of the locations saved me a bunch or time. $17 for each sensor and less than 30 minutes with your help.
