91 - 98 humming noise?

Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone ever came across this problem. Got a 1991, 98 elite, 3.8. I don't drive the car that much, wife does. Over the past 6 to 8
months, it has developed what I decribe as a low pitch steady "humming" noise from the front end when driving the car. It seems like when your going 40to50 mph is when it is most noticable. At first I'm thinking an exhaust leak
but not so sure. Tranny? Front Hubs? The boots on the cv joints all look intact and no leaks. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Re: 91 - 98 humming noise?

Another possibility would be your harmonic balancer. If the rubber seals between the sections of the balancers start to deteriorate, then the balancer will wiggle enough to cause noise. Has the noise gotten louder and more noticeable since it first started?

An easy way to test this would be to remove the belt and then try to wiggle the balacer back and forth and side to side. If you get any play, then your balancer is starting to fail.

Edit: Come to think of it, the balancer should make the most noise at low RPMs (such as idle). Although this doesn't rule the balancer out, it is unlikely since you mentioned that it hummed at higher speeds. An exhaust leak sounds logical to me but it seems unlikely unless your car is rusty or if you have had exhaust work done recently (i.e. a new cat. converter).

Is your ses light on? A transmission failure should have been picked up by the PCM (powertrain control module, or "computer"). If no ses light, then the noise is probably related to a non-electronically controlled component such as exhuast or a bearing.

Have you noticed if the noise increases or decreases with turns? My brother's car had bad rear hubs that made a terrible noise unless horizontal force was applied when he switch lanes quickly on the interstate.

Just a couple ideas

Re: 91 - 98 humming noise?

Alibi,
Don't notice anything on turns. My SES light is always on now due to a bad crank shaft sensor. I will have to check the codes again. Thanks for the input. You gave me a few things to think about.
