Stereo Speakers in '02 Avalanche

Does anybody know what size of speakers come in the 2002 Avalanche? Mine sound like crap, and I'd like to replace them. I just don't know what size. I am guessing they are 6.5". Can anybody confirm or deny this?

Thanks,

Re: Stereo Speakers in '02 Avalanche

I tried Crutchfield. It tells me anything from5 1/4 to 6 3/4 will work.

I can look through the speaker grills on the front door, and it appears that there are two different size speakers on each of the front doors. I am going to guess it has a factory component system in the front (again, I don't know for sure, that's why I'm asking in here). It looks like a 6.5" driver and a 1" (or maybe a 1/2") tweeter in each door. I can't tell for sure. Tweeter looks like it is mounted in some sort of bracket. I don't want to take the door panel off just to check the size of the speakers. I'd like to have the speaks in hand to change them out and only have to take the door panel off one time. Has anybody in here ever taken off the door panel to replace their speaks?

Re: Stereo Speakers in '02 Avalanche

Hi Yes you are quite correct that the speakers are co-axial speakers, to replace them with "better sounding" speakers you should be aware that some Amps may not be adequate to drive your new speakers, so be sure you have an amp that is capable, or you may have far worse sound than you do now such as a lot of bass distortion, a bit of roll-off, so check the specs on the amp and match the speakers to it
saves a big headache and money.

Re: Stereo Speakers in '02 Avalanche

Crutchfield site is informative, but understand that if it shows multiple sizes can fit, the smaller sizes use an adapter ring to fill in the space. Find the largest size that is offered. If you choose a speaker that is undersized, you will see the adapter rings automatically added to your cart.

As far as component speakers are offered (separate woofer and tweeter), you can usually tell if yout truck has them by looking for the small (1 to 1-1/2" diameter) grilles that typically point either directly towards the passengers or up to reflect sound off the windshield and towards the cabin. They are usually located at the base of the A-pillar.

Hope this helps!
