A/C Clutch or Compressor?

96 GC 3.8 Ltr 190K miles original compressor. I've got a whirring noise coming from the compressor. Nailed it down using a piece of garden hose as a stethoscope. The noise started two weeks ago and is now constant with the A/C on or off. It is only slightly drowned out when the clutch engages. The pitch increases with engine speed. I see and feel no wobble on the pulley. I'm thinking the compressor bearings are going and the clutch is not the problem. What do you think? Is there anything short of changing the compressor I could try?
