Me and a friend are trying to change his 92 singlecab 5 speed 6cyl s10 to a 4wd. What all will need to be done to do this?

Re: 2wd to 4wd

It's an easy job, find one just like his in a used car lot, and ask them to trade his in for it!

The job is possible, but since the 4wd frames are different it isn't worth it.

You'd need a transmission / transfer case, the rear drive shaft, wire harnes, probably a Jeep Cheroke front differential, front leaf springs and hangers that would work. A custom front drive shaft. A new set of rear springs to match the heigth of the new front end.
More custom tools than I have, fabricating skills, 6 months of weekends or so without any use of the truck.
And I'm only missing about 1/2 the parts needed.

If he finds a 4wd truck in simular shape at a car lot he can probably trade his in on it, although they'll want some additional money. Probably somewhere around $1000 - $1500. Well worth it when you look at all the time, effort, and trouble of the conversion.

The reason why I say a Jeep front differential is because they are simular dimensions to our rigs, making them the closest thing to a bolt in unit.
You really don't want to mess around installing the factory installed IFS system.

Re: 2wd to 4wd

it would probably be easier to do what i did last year. it was on a ford 3/4 ton, but its the same principle. find an old beater 4wd and put your friends body on it. if needed cut out the area in the floor for the shifter. you should be able to transfer clutch pedal assembly and other things. the biggest problem i had was getting 3 of my buddies together at the same time to help me lift off the cab and the bed. when your done, keep extra parts you need and put the rest of them on ebay. with any luck you will make enough to pay for the truck or at least most of it

Re: 2wd to 4wd

If you insist on a 4wd,,and don't want to trade your unit in,,,find a 4wd unit with a bad motor and put his body on it..or sell his and buy a 4wd unit..
