Thats some pretty sweet custom modifying. Nice work man!
Very cool and clever.

Red face The thing about ram air...

Is that basically nobody makes a useful ram-air installation! The idea of ram-air is to make forced induction by the velocity of air outside the car. To pull this off effectively, there has to be a loooong funnel-like intake, taking in air and increasing its velocity as high as possible. The top-of-hood intakes of Camaro SS's and many other custom jobs works fine as a cold air intake, but offers none of the benefits of a theoretically-working ram-air system.

The other bummer of ram-air is that if you did make a useful system (it could actually register 1-2psi of positive pressure), you have to get it up to crazy speeds (120-200mph) before there's any noticeable benefit in performance. Then again, if ram-air really DID offer good performance gains, it would already be standard on every performance car made by every vendor.

Thats just gona give the intake cold air to suck. No air will get rammed into the intake with that scoop

Yeah, but it looks damn cool! And at least it will give it more cold air. Even if it doesnt do much its cool to see interesting ideas. Especially when someone shows pics.

Well at least it is an actual cold air induction system unlike people that install ones where the air filter is behind the engine calling it cold air induction.

Nice work, tis quite spiffy.

I thought increased velocity = less pressure sice there is no restriction.
but yes a tapered funnel ram would cause restriction as the air is forced to the rear, and the pressure would rise.

I based mine on the idea that I would use a scoop that was larger then the combined diameter of the carb barrels. thus the barrels would provide the restriction... and the box would just allow the scoop to hold more air.

if by tapered funnel you mean something similar to velocity stacks then you are mistaken.

velocity stacks cause the air to spiral (like when you flush your toilet). this makes the air enter the cylineder at a fastyer rate then the cylinder is pulling. sort of a forced induction system.

Re: The thing about ram air...

I'm talking about the design of the scoop.
Marasmus, said it would requre a long funnel like intake.

the air is being rammed in... so the pressure rises as the air is forced thru a progressively smaller opening.

the opening of the scoop is too large to affect the airflow of just the carb itself, but I would like velocitly stacks on dual sidedrafts... I'll just have to wait till i can make a custom manifold.

also the reason cars don't have scoops is because not everyone want's one... its easier to add a scoop then it is to remove one.

Also having the scoop at the leading edge of the car or facing backwards as a cowl induction near the base of the windshield will net the best results. But air is still being rammed in where I have my scoop its just not as much. I made one 3" tall and @ 75 mph the top of the metal buldges to about 3.5" and @ 100 mph or more it goes to 4" high... thats a shit load of air just trapped obove the carb having nowhere else to go but down.
