Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

I'm looking to put a new exhaust on my Z24 Cavalier here's what I'm looking for or not looking for. As far as sound goes I want something deep, low, and not too loud, I don't want it to over ride the radio or other people in the car. I also want a good performance exhaust, something I can get the car inspected with, without switching back to the stock exhaust or having to know somebody to smack a sticker on it. Judging by this, is this a good set up? Here's what I'm looking at...

Rksport 4-2-1 header

With a Magnaflow directfit catalytic converter so i'll have an outlet for the oxygen sensor, and i'll probly have to cut the flanges off, i know.

Dynomax resonator 26" Case length - 31" Over all length

Flowmaster 80 series muffler or a dynomax super turbo muffler, whichever you think would be better?

Borla intercooled tip

Now, I also realize that these camaro mufflers are designed for the exhaust piping to be on the passenger side of the car, Cavaliers are on the drivers side, can I flip the muffler the other way to accomodate this? Thanks for any input.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

Dunno. Since you have a 4 banger and we all have 6 or more. The sound would be lower but should be good none the less.
I've heard that duels on a I-4 are bad since they provide too much flow. But I could be wrong.
My suggestion would be to go with the Dynomax Turbo Exhaust. Should sound good and be what you are looking for. Since most people around here would say stay away from the Flowmaster stuff.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

Why would you stay away from Flowmaster? I ask because I don't know. And yeah, you're right about the loss of rear end pressure with the duals, I had the rksport dual set up on my last cavalier and i lost alot, but that also had 2 seperate mufflers, so i figure with a camero single muffler with 2 outlets, that should keep alot of the pressure.

Most people around here don't like them. I personaly have them on my car and it sounds and runs fine to me. But, people have different views on things.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

I still say that flowmaster cant be that bad. I have talked to people who have been in the race car biz for longer than I have been alive and am yet to hear anything hard and factual against flowmaster. I had a flowmaster on my RS and it sounded mean. It was slow but I could scare away a lot of people with it. I dont like how flowmaster sounds on 6 cyl cars so I dont know about a 4. Especially with a resonator ahead of it. I would do some research on what other people are using. Even on hondas. I have heard some decent sounding honda cars running around. You just shouldnt use the pepboys bean can. Borla race mufflers sound nice.

Yeah, I'm definitely staying away from the fart cans, I don't want to be looked at as someone who watched The fast and furious, got a kick out of it and decided to be a "hardcore racer" with a mostly stock z24. That's why I've been doing a lot of research on a good quality/decent exhaust system.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

ok... if you're looking for an aggressive sound on a 4 cylinder engine it ain't going to happen unless you cam it up, put full length headers on it and gut the exhaust system including the cats and muffler. Yes it will have a better sound to it, but it's NEVER going to be loud enough that it will overpower the passenger compartment to the point where you can't hold a conversation. That's from experience.

I used to do some work for a mechanic who would only put high perf. exhausts on 4 cylinder engines after having the customer sign a statement that he knew what he was doing. In EVERY case the customer would be like.. "I thought it would be louder than that... Don't they make it more mean sounding?"

So, take the flowmasters / performance exhaust making the exhaust louder theory with a grain of salt.

Now on the other hand... I've never heard a 4 cylinder engine on glass packs...

Flowmasters.. have them on mine... they're ok. Kinda like the cheap end of the spectrum as far as exhausts go. I've heard a lot of ggod stuff about Dynomax exhausts and headers, but nothing that I would consider reliable. I guess it all boils down to how much you want to spend. Flowmasters get the job done, and do it well.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

PS - I would think you would be better off sticking to an exhaust system designed for your application, instead of trying to adapt one... I believe you will have problems with the pressure. Think about it, a stock V8 exhaust is what 1.5" - 2" in diameter, a stock 4 cylinder is what 1". I would think you better ask alot of questions from the people that design these things before moving forward.

Re: Hello Camaro people, quick question regarding exhaust

I'm not looking for a loud or mean sound, if anything I want it as quiet as possible but with good performance.
