MPG for a 351 Cleveland

Looking at buying a '72 Mach 1 with an automatic 351 Cleveland, 4v edelbrock intake with a 650 holly carb. Just wondering if anyone knows what kind of mileage I'd get per gallon with this thing. I'd love to take the time to restore it proper, but if I'm throwing all my money in the tank I'll never be able to save to get anything for it. I considered reducing it to a 2v with an adapter, but I was told by a local performance parts guy that it wouldn't do a thing for it, might even be worse in the long run. I have full intentions of tuning it up proper and changing the gear ratios (uncle is a mechanic) to get a few more city miles, but thats assuming I decide to get the thing. First car, I want it to be one I'm going to keep for a while, the kind I've always wanted, but unfortunately I have to look at the long run.

Also looking at a '73 mustang coupe with a 302, thing is in really nice shape and comes with allot of extras, but its my understanding that the difference between the 302 and the 351c are only like 2-5 mpg, if thats the case I'll say the hell with it all and buy the Mach 1.

I've been looking on the web, I've found numbers ranging between 12 and 16 average mpg, so it hasn't been the most help.

I know it seems fooling to be picking at fuel economy when it comes to a classic, but the way things are now and the distance I drive to work each day (30 minuted both directions at about 80k) I stand to screw myself in a big way with the lame job I hold for the time being.

Any input would be appreciated.

Actually I got into a fight with the seller. I am now the proud owner of a 1971 cutlass with a 350 rocket, having a blast working on her too. Thanks for the post though.

Re: MPG for a 351 Cleveland

My dad had a '70 Cutlass with a 350. That thing had bags of power and we never felt we needed the 455.

Since this thead is getting old anyways and the 351 C is no longer an issue, I have closed it.
