What kind of wax? and wax questions water beading
What is a good wax to use that WILL not leave water rings?
I used to wax my car years ago and what would happen in the summer it would rain then the sun would come out and the water that was beading up on the hood would dry and leave ring spots from where the water bead was. Is wax still this way? It did more harm than good i had little rings all over my hood that the sun cooked them in. I used mothers wax back then on a clear coat finish. I see that wax is no longer for sale. |

Re: What kind of wax? and wax questions water beading
Any wax which allows the water to bead will possibly leave these rings once the panel drys. The rings are from deposits in the water, not from anything in the wax itself. If you were to pour distilled water on your hood and let it dry, there would be no spots. So in this respect I don't think it's correct to blame the wax. Not all rain is the same. Some will contain more deposits than others. This is also true of hose water.
I know it's not always convenient to do so, and you certainly don't want to wipe the car dry if it's dirty, but drying off the car (or driving it) after a rain is the best way to prevent these rings. Rain followed by hot sun while the car remains parked is the worst, and can even etch the finish with rings. If the finish has no wax then the water will not bead, so rings are less likely to develop, but I don't think that's a good enough reason to not have wax protection on your finish.

Re: What kind of wax? and wax questions water beading
I don't know about that specific wax, but I do believe that the advantages of using wax far outweigh the disadvantages. It can be time consuming but waxing a car brings out the true color of the vehicle as well as protecting your baby from the elements. I agree with Almost Stock, in that if you were to dry it off or drive the vehicle before the rain has a chance to leave a stain it's much more economical & advantagious. I use the same principle when I use a self-serve car wash (I really hate those things). As soon as I finish washing the car, I either dry it with a chamois or I head straight for the nearest highway. I pull out on the highway, tromp on in a bit to get up to cruising speed and drive for a couple of miles. Especially if it's hot outside, the water dries quite fast.
p.s. my Lumina LTZ is a trompin son of a b****
