2000 Windstar electrical problem

Hi, new to this forum, hope one of you guys can help me. When I turn off the ignition, the lights, heater, and radio come on and won't shut off. The door locks won't operate correctly either, the driver side lock will not stay down. When the the van is running, everything operates normally. I swapped the relays and tried a new ignition switch, but that didn't help. Any suggestions before I take it to a dealer? Does the front ECM control any of this?

Re: 2000 Windstar electrical problem

electrical FUN FUN...well what you are describing is the same things that happen when the key is turned to ACC with my van, the drivers side lock will always try to unlock, knowing the key is in, and the rest well same thing. According to the wiring diagram, all those things do run thru the G.E.M. (general electronic module)
when this problem occurs and you open the door, do you get the door ajar warning? or do the wipers work at this point...all of these items run thru the GEM.

Re: 2000 Windstar electrical problem

Thanks for replying. Everything that should only be on when the key is is on or at ACC is on and can't be turned off even when the key is out of the ignition. That includes the wipers. I tried disconnecting the alternator to see if there was any beed through from a bad diode, but that didn't help. Is the GEM the module that is on the inside firewall near the fuse panel? I tried disconnecting the plugs to that and was able to get things to shut off. I need to look at the schematic to see which plugs are inputs and which are outputs so I can determine if the module is bad or if something else is activating it. Did you replace yours? How much did that cost you? Thanks for the help.

beyond that I am afraid I cant help you, i never did replace mine, so cost and such I have no idea. My guess is that it is a dealer only item, wich is not good. And yes I do believe the GEM is near the fuse panel. Good luck...let us know how you make out with this issue
