2000 LeSabre noise in trunk area

In my dad's 2000 LeSabre there is a regular pumping-type noise that comes from the back of the car. It runs for a few seconds every few minutes. What the heck is this, specifically? (It sounds a lot like an air pump but this car does not have air suspension.)

Just a guess, but if it has a rear radio antenna, does it go all the way down when you turn off the ignition and open the door?

Probably the auto leveling system pump, may have a leak in the system so it runs excessively.

That would seem obvious, but as I said this car does not have self-leveling suspension. Plus the air pump for those is traditionally under the hood, not toward the back.

And the antenna thing would seem obvious, except there isn't one on 2000 up LeSabres (or, rather, it's built into the back glass and doesn't move). It doesn't just run when the car starts or shuts off the way an antenna would, it's at regular intervals throughout the running time.

Actually, I think the air pump is under the rear of the car on 97 up models. Just wondering if this was purchased second hand and the original owner replaced the struts with non-air struts?

On my 97 the pump for the air struts is in the right rear. How do you know it doesn't have air struts?

I have a 2000 Buick LeSabre and it does have an auto-leveling system for the rear. The air compressor is located under the rear towards the right side. As HotZ says, maybe the previous owner has removed the air shocks and the compressor is continuously running. If everything is intact, then you may have a problem as MaxWedge says. The compressor on my car runs a few seconds after it's started and then shuts off.

AIR pump is in the r/s trunk area.
