Programming 97 keypad (fob)

The key fob I got with the truck doesnt work.. new battery.. still nothing..

I've found a couple on Ebay and other places.. and there's a local guy that sells them used, but I need to know how to program these to work with my truck.. I've found the programming sequence for 99-06 but that doesnt help me much..since mine is a 97..

I can't be the first person with this problem, anyone have any help/info/tips on how-to or where to find the information.. Thanks for all your help..

Re: Programming 97 keypad (fob)

I have a 1997 Sierra and successfully programmed the keyless entry remote myself. The information on ebiz.netopia.com/pyr/gm205 is correct, plus it shows a figure of the OBD-II port, but I'll offer the following anyway. The instructions that follow are basically the same as on ebiz.netopia.com, but the additional detail may prove useful to somebody out there. I can't vouch for the vehicle years/models for which it applies, or the horn chirping thing (I had my key turned on when I did it), or the liftgate thing (as I don't have one), but I can tell you with certainty that the procedure worked on my 1997 GMC Sierra K1500. Anyway, here's what I found and used...

1997, 1998, 1999 Chevrolet/Geo Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban - 4WD

Transmitter Programming Base

If the key is in the ON position during programming procedure, the horn chirp will be disabled, if the key is in the OFF position, the horn chirp will be enabled. The horn will chirp when the lock button is pressed two times.

When programming the remote control door lock reciever, All transmitters must be programmed at this time in order for the transmitters to operate the vehicle.

1. Ground pin 4 to pin 8 of the data link connector (DLC). The reciever will respond by locking and unlocking the doors, and activating the liftfgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.
2. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the first transmitter to be programmed until the locks cycle (approximately 10 seconds).
3. Repeat step 2 for up to four total transmitters to be programmed (if available). The reciever will respond by locking and unlocking the doors and activating the liftgate window release (if equipped) within 2 seconds.
4. Remove the ground applied to the DLC.
5. Lock and unlock the doors in order to verify the transmitter operation.
6. Activate the rear window release in order to verify the transmitter operation.
