Got a stumper for ya'll

For about a year now my engine light came on, but didnt seem to have a problem so I let it go. Then after a while I noticed that when I was driving the highway that my RPM's were at 3.5 when i was only going 60 mph on a straight stretch. Now if its warm out and I run the truck too long my temp gauge goes to 250, so i turn the heat on and it goes down.
Took it to a new garage and was told its a TCC code on my transmission. After mechanic went to change the $10 part, said that its the censor inside the transmission.

Anyone have this problem? or can you tell me if a transmission censor would have my rpm's run really high and have my temp guage to go up like that. I really dont want to pay lot of money and still have my rpms running high and temp to keep going up.

If it's a problem with your tranny then essentially it could tell the engine comp. to rev higher to get the same result out of the tranny and in turn the engine reving higher could also cause the heat to build up before it can dissapate.

thanks a bunch, so i guess im going to have to throw it in the garage and see how much the damage might cost. I was searching for the part online and just for the censor it was like $450, so i can just imagine what the whole job may cost

What sensor is it? Alot of us on here prefer doing the work to our jeeps ourselves instead of taking it to a "stealer" so I'm sure someone on here would know exactly how to replace it and probably be able to save you alot of money.

its a Torque Converter Clutch, when i looked for the part, it had that you just open the tranny pan and it right inside.

But one other thing i was wondering. My old mechanic told me that my rpms and over heating was because i had a bad valve in my engine but when the new mechanic did the test on it he said the engine didnt code anything

It sounds like you may be in 3rd, rather than o/d, with your rpms at 3500 @ 60mph. Check the o/d lockout switch first (I know it's obvious and I don't intend to be insulting).

The overheating problem could be coming from any of a number of places. Thermostat, water pump, radiator. A bit more description about your overheating problem would be helpful.

What year and how many miles on your Cherokee?

Need more information here.
Year? Model? Auto we presume.
Pull engine code and report back. Code checker cost $100. You can use it in the future if you need.
For overheating, I would look at thermostat and the overall cooling system.
Are the radiator fins OK and not rusted out?

first.. its a 97 jeep cherokee sport, 182,000 miles , automatic ...i know i know , dont even bother with fixing it, but i cant afford another vehicle right now, so this one is going to have to do.

then, where would the o/d lockout switch be? i have had it to 3 different garages in the past year ..And the overheating problem doesnt have anything to do with the thermostat, water pump radiator, got all that fixed already ..
reguarding the engine code, the engine didnt code only my transmission coded, that came up with a tcc

I have a 97 and have done a lot of work on it although mine has less miles (131k).

There in no overdrive lockout switch...4th gear is overdrive and 3rd gear is one to one (gear ratio). The gear shifter controls this. Try shifting the gear shift.

Also check the throttle position sensor which controls kickdown (that is like a downshift when the accelerator pedal is floored). Or just see if it kicks down.

Did you or have you overhauled the so called NSS which actually is a trAnsmission range sensor which indicates which gear it is in (PRNDL or prindle switch as they call it at the stealer)?

Oh, does the transmission feel like it is slipping?

Check your throttle position sensor on the throttle body. Its what controls the tranny as well.

Not sure bout your vehicle....but on my 89' in the harness that goes to the module for the tranny(located under the right side of the lower dash) there is a fuse...if the fuse is blown....the tranny WILL ONLY SHIFT IF YOU TAKE IT THROUGH THE SEQUENCE BY MOVING THE SHIFTER YOURSELF.
Also make sure the connectors to the module are pushed in tightly.To get to the module the lower part of the dash will have to be dropped...The connectors have tabs that hold them in place....If the tabs are in place then check the fuse....
If the module is not working properly you will be taking off in 3rd instead of 1st....kinda like tryin to drive a manual tranny w/a bad clutch
