1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

A co-worker is looking to sale me his 92 Nissan 240. He says its a 2.4L twin cam with a standard 5 speed transmission. I did a little research and it seems like the engine and trans are pretty reliable. I was just wondering if these cars are prone to any particular problems?????

Thanks for any advice............

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

Im not expert thats for sure... some of these guys on here know there sit FOR SURE... but when i got my 90 240sx... i thought it was a peice because it would not start to save my life... i just had to replace the ground wires... alot of ka24e or de's are like that... From what i hear at least... Mine runs like a champ... doesnt eat any oil or any kind of fluids except i have a rear end problem but fro mwhat i know that isnt prone to 240's... i think its just a my-problem... lol, but my sx is as reliable as can be... i drive 30-40 min. every day to my school for class and stuff and it gets me there and back fine with no problems... i also beat the hell outa it on weekend... (lol) and its still in really good condition for a 90 woth 150,000 mies on it... My opinion buy it and then sell it to me..lol nah but i would deffinatly consider buying the car unless your really not into tuning and turbo's all that much... then i would just leave it for a tuner guy to get ahold of... lol... but yeah... reliability=10.0... Fun to drive weekend car=10.0... Everything else=10.0... thats in my eyes tho.. good luck man

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

240s, like most nissans are very reliable even when you mod the hell out of them. just remember that the car is 14 years old, and it will mostly depend on how well the car was taken care of.

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

If it's a fastback you might want to check the hatch for water leaks
If it has a sunroof check for water leaks
I've notice that most 240's have idle problems, easy to fix.
It's a good car

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

I think I'm gonna get this car. I can't say I'm a big tuner guy because my first love was muscle cars. Then I calmed down a little bit and got a 3.8L Thunderbird, and that turned out to be a huge mistake. This will be my first car that was not manufactured by an American company. But I'm really looking forward to the change of pace. Hopefully i'll only need to post questions about modifying and tuning, and not posts like "please help overheating" like I had to do with my TBird. Thanks

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

I forgot to ask, does this car require 89 or above octane, or can it run well on 87 octane fuel?

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

timing chain rattle. i've yet to hear a DE motor without timing chain rattle. i'm not 100% sure on this, but the chain guides are obsolete now. you can just remove them and tighten the chain. i dont know for sure though, thats what i read on a TSB though.

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

lol 87 is all i buy......ever, since i started driving. Iv never bought higher unless its for the lawn mower or something lol. Not because im cheap.....well yea kind of for that reason.

until turbo......then premium goes in.

only problems iv had are typical "wore down" problems. My first 240 has 170,000+ miles. Iv changed all 4 injectors, starter, fuel filter, and rear brake calipers(they got stuck while being compressed and rubbed ALL the time). But that car sits in the driveway now. Hasnt been started in like 4-5 months. But there good cars. I own 2 now. Learned how to drive on one. MY mom owned my first one, bought it brand new in 92. It held up nicely, was mint.....till the 16 year old got it (ME) lol. That was 5 years ago........

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

this car has one of those high performance mufflers that is xtremly loud. which i dont mind to much if my girl-friend didnt live in a city where the police are looking for any reason to pull you over. is there a high performance muffler that sounds nice (loud but not to loud) that i can replace it with? if im not mistaken the one thats on the car now is "aem" or something like that. the only mufflers ive heard of are flow-masters, but i dont know if they're for tuners, or just muscle cars. thanks everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

I pretty sure aem doesn't make exhaust systems, If they do then my bad.
RS*R exhaust's arent too loud and look pretty stock

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

Just so all of you know......the higher octane of fuel, the slower it burns= better gas milage. So everyone who thinks there saving $$$ by buying 87 octane YOUR WRONG!!!!U'll have better gas milage and your motor will run faster, better, stronger and your doing your poor old engine a favor!
Just thought i'd let u know!.....Giving your 240 87 octane is like feeding your dog u love so much, No name shitty dog food!Think about it AND TRY iT!!!

Re: 1992 Nissan 240SX General Question

do the higher octane fuels have additives that helps and engine run better? i know a BP station not far from where i live has signs that there 93 octane gas helps clean the engine. how true this is ive know idea. what worked for me in my thunderbird was 87 octane, and once a month i would put a bottle of seafoam in the fuel tank. that worked fine until the head gaskets started f***ing with me (damn ford and their 3.8 V6s). i got no problem running 93 octane, but ive heard that if your car doesnt require that high of an octane fuel, it could actually hurt the cars performance.
