tranny swap

Couple questions
1. is it possible to swap the 2nd gen 5spd for a 2nd gen automatic
2. is it easy to find a 5sd
3. is it easy to sell the automatic
4. is it realatively easy to do the swap aka not imossibly hard and exensive

Re: tranny swap

I'm assuming you mean going from auto to manual? It's not impossibly hard, since I've done it before (well, I had a hand in probably 2 thirds of it). But it is impossibly aggrevating and time consuming. It's all the little parts you would never have thought of that hold you up for a week at a time. Must have taken the guy that I did it with 2 months to wrap it up. There is probably a lot more info available now though, this was years ago. I think he found some of the wiring changes and such on the AT and NT yahoo groups, if they even still exist.

I won't say it can't be done, or that it shouldn't be done, but I will say that the odds of it being a worthwhile venture are slim to none for 99% of the people out there.

Re: tranny swap

I agree, it is possible, but unless you're very good with this kind of stuff it won't be worth your time and effort. I will be doing this to my Talon, but the only reason that I'm doing it is because I have a parts car with EVERYTHING that I need in it (I'm guessing you'll have to search for all the parts), so for me, it's a matter of unbolting, maybe drilling a few holes, and rebolting up.

Re: tranny swap

umm...in all honesty the swap is cake...i did it on my 96 talon tsi.. and only took about 3 days
here are the parts you will need this is for a fwd..if your going to do it on an awd you will need a new xfer case drive shaft and rearend...
1 tranney
2. clutch and flywheel of course
3. new flywheel bolts...the auto are just to short
4.pedals
5. shifter with all the cables
6 master and slave cylinder
7. a clutch line goes from the master to the slave cylinder i recomend slowboy for this 100 bucks for the ss line but it will make everthing so much easyer..
the only wiring part you will half to do is the inhibiter switch you half to cross one wire to activate the starter when you turn the key...

putting all the stuff together isnt bad when you go to put the pedals in the holes for the clutch pedal will already be there same for the master cylinder..the only cutting you will half to do is cutting a hole in the fire wall for the master cylinder... but its dimpled in on the fire wall...its cake...the rest is easy simple tareing off the old parts and putting on the new...

if you have any questions or anything let me aim talont28

But if you were talking about going standard to auto..thats a whole diffrent story you will need the auto ecu...and the harness...it will be a nightmare...

Re: tranny swap

I'm pretty sure he wants to go auto to manual. Notice how he asked if it was hard to FIND a 5-speed and how hard it was to SELL and automatic?

Honestly cantgo2fast, if you have to ask about it, you probably shouldn't be attempting it yourself anyways.
