Blower Fan

I know this is a chev forum but I've posted this in the Buick aswell.

My question is my when I turn the heat or air conditioner on the fan only works on 4 and 5 position. It will not work at all in 1, 2, or 3rd position. I have a 2003 Rendezvous.

Welcome to the forum!

The good news is: A blower is a blower -- they are all about the same.

The first thing I would suspect is the "Blower Motor Resistor Pack." It controls all the speeds below HIGH. Since your lower speeds are out, I would suspect it first. Should be mounted near your blower motor.

After the resistor pack, I would suspect the controls, or the connections to it.

Titan,

I just fixed the very same problem on my Venture. The resistor pack as suggested should be the first thing you check. Basically the fan control speed adds resistances to slow down the motor. At high speed there are no resistors and every speed below it adds a resistance. In your case it sounds like the first resistor is good but when you go to the next slower speed there is a break in the reisitor or circuit board (or wiring) and thus any speed lower that also uses this resitor wil not work (series connection).

The hardest part for me was getting to the resistor pack but it is a fairly straight forward job. The part cost me about $50 Canadian from GM. The guy at the counter hinted that it is a common failure item on the Venture and it has been redesigned. They are also available for less at Rockauto.com but the shipping costs to Canada put it near the GM price.

any idea where to look for this resistor pack in a 2003 Buick Rendezvous
or do you know of a internet link to a diagram or other info on how to do it yourself

A Haynes manual (located at most auto parts stores -even Walmarts) should have a section on this. I know mine for Venture does. There are only about $15-20 and although they are not overly specific in all areas they are a good basic reference.

Most blowers set-ups would be similar especially another GM product.
I would check near the blower motor itself. Under the passenger dash. DISABLE THE AIRBAG FOR YOUR SAFETY. You will only see the plastic plate as most of the pack is within the plenum. (at least it is on my Venture). It has a pigtail about 4" long that powers the motor and a 6 or 8 position (or thereabouts) connector that plugs into the resistor pack. If you look closely you can see a relay on the outside of the plastic plate.

A new one in your hands would help you identify it and perhaps give you a hint for removal. I believe the back two mounting holes are actually open slots. These bolts were very difficult to get to and if I wish I had known that I only had to slightly loosen them. I would think the odds of it being you resistor pack are greater than 50/50.

Check Rockauto.com as I think I remember that they had drawings of them online.

I don't have a diagram, but here are the instructions from the factory manual:

1) Remove the right side instrument panel insulator. (below the dash)
2) Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.
3) Remove the blower motor mounting screws.
4) Remove the blower motor from the HVAC module assembly.
5) Disconnect the electrical connector from the blower motor resistor assembly.

Important
Only loosen both of the forward blower resistor assembly mounting screws. The blower motor resistor assembly mounting holes are slotted.

6) Loosen the forward blower resistor assembly mounting screws.
7) Remove the rearward blower resistor assembly mounting screw.
8) Remove the blower motor resistor assembly from the HVAC module assembly.

Installation is the reverse of the above instructions.

I did this repair once. It seems to me (on my Montana, anyway) that it was easiest to remove the glove compartment. It just freed up a lot of work space.

I didn't have any directions in hand, but with the part in front of me, it wasn't hard to figure out what to remove and replace.

I just found this thread when looking for a the problem with my 2002 Buick rendezvous Blower fan. Speeds 1 and 2 not working 3,4 and 5 fine. I followed the advice in this thread and was able to use replace the blower resistor pack as described. paid $50 CAD at GM dealer and instructions were exactly as described. thanks a lot

I own a 2002 Rendezvous which has had the same blower problem for at least a year (among other weird electrical problems). It worked at speed 5, so to avoid a costly service bill we just lived with it. When speed 5 finally failed, effectively rendering the entire HVAC system useless, I turned to the internet for help and found this site.

Going on the tip above, I spent Sat. morning searching for the blower motor resistor part, which I found at a local Chevy dealer for $47.00 (incl. tax). Thanks to the instructions on this page I was able to replace the part myself in about an hour and the entire system works great now on all speeds. Many thanks to all who contributed to the thread.
