timing belt sliiped.....

well, i was going to fix up my crx for auto crossing in street prepared but i have a problem, my timing belt went out while i was cruising at about 45mph. The car died and i tried to keep startiing at about 5 or six times. I know now that was a bad idea. I had the belt fixed for 110 dollars. I had a freind of a friend do it for me. They told me that i bent all of the exhaust valves. He said that he put the new belt on and it was fucedup. I had the car towed to my house and told him i will deal with it instead of him fixing the head, which he said was ruined and would cost 500 to 600 to fix. This is the thing, it does not appear that they took the head off. I am having some doubt as to what they are saying. Is it possible to fix the timing belt without taking the head off. If so, am i right in saying that you cant tell if the valves are bent if the head had not come off? The old belt was missing about half of the teeth. It should have broke earlier. I am trying to take tyhe head off but i am having trouble. The valve cover is off and i loosned the head bolts and the spark plugs aer out. It wont budge. I know i need to take off more stuuf but what? the car is a 91 crx si with a d16a6. Any and all comments are welcomed. Just dont knock me for not changing belt or trying to start tye car, i know this already.

basically you can tell if the valves are bent just by the simple sound of compression. first check make sure he has the timing belt on correctly (not on the wrong stoke). if that is good then, yeah, pull the head the valves are bad. i am not sure abour the mpfi manifolds but i beleive there is one bolt on the bottom side of the manifold connected to a bracket. obviously un screw that. leave the intake manifold on. take the exhaust manifold off. disconnect all related wiring and hoses. then take out the head bolts and it should come off. if it doesn't come of you may need to pry it a little cus it may be a little stuck but use your head if it isn't coming off with a little bit of prying something is still holding it on. good luck if you need more help.. reply

thanks for the reply. i was hoping to not have to take off the the exhaust manifold but oh well. leaving the intake manifold connected will help. i might do this right now keep the replies comming guys.

10 mins with a compression and leakdown and you will find out all you need to know.

if your valves are gone. go pick up a new head or longblock.

yeah if i remeber correctly it was about 10 bucks a valve when i had to replace one of mine so i would pick up a used head if you have too many valves out. and you dont need to disconnect the exhaust manifold, just disconnect it from the down pipe, but it makes it easier. you wouldn't need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket for it is metal and i reused mine.

Thanks guys. I have another car i can drive for awhile so i think this is a blessing in disguised for what i really want to do, a b16 swap, maybe with turbo but it sounds pricy. I am still trying to get the hea off to find out what is wrong. If it is not that badf then i may stay with a stock engine for now. Summers he in phoenix means very few business conventions( i work at a hotel)an thus very little money. BUT, i am going to work on as much as i can to save labor. I am going to try to change alot in my car. If i can get a jdm front end, i will. Defiently need to change my cooling system. I saw a fluydine radiator that was half size for the crx. Does anybody know about this. It would open room in the engine bay. I just got my brembo disk for all 4 corners and axxis brake pads. AS well as a tokico kit with springs and struts. This will be a fun summer with alot of questions for help. Thank you.

yeah you can get the smaller radiator i was thinkin about doin it too since im workin on my swap but i dont want to spend the extra cash right now. to fit the smaller radiator you can make a bracket to hold it in..search for it and you can see how a lot of ppl do it.
