need help. trying to remodel car. not sure what is the best way to remove paint. was thinking bout sanding down but a friend advised me to use paint thinner. said he used it on his civic. Is this a good idea? if so what type of paint thinner? if not what is the fastest cheapest way to go about removing paint in order to prime and repaint.

Re: advice on best way to remove paint
Cheapest way... next time you're flushing your brake fluid or coolant use that. I hear that takes paint off pretty well.
Other than that paint thinner should do the trick. Though sanding it should do it too. I'd probably only sand it if you had a power sander. Unless you want a really good work out going over your whole car with sand paper by hand.I'm not sure how much help this was, but either the paint thinner or sanding it should work just fine. As for brand of paint thinner... I think any paint thinner should do the trick. |

Re: advice on best way to remove paint
paint thinner is really only used to clean brushes and things like that, not really for stripping car paint, it might work but will take a long time
aircraft stripper is the shit, you put one coat of it on let it sit for ~10 mins and the paint it stripped to the primer (sometimes metal) then wipe it off and sand whats left or do another coat works amazingly but pretty harmful with out goggles/face mask/gloves (thick rubber gloves)

Re: advice on best way to remove paint
yeah aircraft paint remover literally wrinkles and melts the paint off. I would apply 1 coat and it off after 10-15 mins and then just sand the rest. Make sure you use an electric palm sander, if u dont have one, u can rent one at home depot, go get one.
