96 Sable - AC does not cycle at all

I had my AC compressor replaced. Now my AC does not work at all. No cold air. When I turn on the AC it does not ever engage the compressor. I have checked for lose wiring, connectors, blown fuses, and everything looks good to me. I am wonding what may be the reason for no compressor engaging.

If I am out of freon would it prevent the compressor from turning on? Any help for ideas is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

A low freon level would still have the compressor cycling on and off, even for a short period of time.

I'd say your problem is with the "new" compressor. Was the compressor filled up properly with the correct oil, and does the compressor clutch free wheel when the car is running and the compressor is off?

Are the wires to the compressor installed right and tight?

You have steered me in the right direction. I wasn't sure if the low freon would cause this (thinking the freon may have leaked out). It free wheels just fine. It never engages. I checked the wires and they look good. I need to double check them again though.

I couldn't install the compressor myself so I paid a garage to do the install and recycle the freon. I will take it back and see if they can figure it out.

Thanks.

Well, if you paid a garage to do the work then the garage should have checked out the A/C system to insure it was working properly before they released the car back to you.

I'd take the car back in and speak to the Service Manager personally. It sounds to me like they screwed up and didn't check out their installation.

Whenever an A/C system is opened up and put back together it has to be "leak-tested" and recharged, and then tested again to insure all conponents are working, and they should have a warranty on their parts and labor.
