Which Blue Paint for the Ferrari 612?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows which blue paint resembles the blue used on the 612 below. So far I've found these Tamiya Laquers:

TS15 - Blue
TS19 - Metallic Blue
TS50 - Mica Blue
TS53 - Light Met Blue

I'm lost. Can someone help?

If you're gonna use only tamiya sprays then try TS-64 Dark Mica Blue or TS-53 Deep Metallic Blue. From that photo TS-53 seems closer, since Dark Mica Blue is so dark that it looks like black metallic.

Out of those four TS-50 Mica Blue should do the trick. It is slightly translucent and gets darker with more coats or depending on your undercoat. There is also TS-51 Telefonica/Racing Blue which is a shade or two darker than TS-50.

Before you try to go and match it, you should first figure out what color the car really is. Spectacular as the pic is, it's not a particullarly good color reference, with the sky and white buildings reflected in it. The 612 is offered in at least 5 different factory shades of blue- you can see them all here (click on the first 5 shades of blue in the list). Once you decide what color you think it is (I think it may be Blu Mirabeau), do a search for Ferrari's in that color. Than you at least have a good reference to match.

Hmm.. those Cobra Colors paints look very interesting. I might just try the Blue Mirabeau. My preference was to use Tamiya TS since this will be only my 3rd model and I don't know if I'm comfortable enough yet to use my airbrush to paint the body. I use it for everything else, but paiting the body kinda scares me. TS is just so easy to use.

I think its Blue Mirabeau too, which was first offered on the 612. I've seen multiple pictures where that color looks very different, from the blue in your attached photo, to a more grayish blue. I painted a 612 in Blue Mirabeau and it is closer to a grayish blue.

Re: Which Blue Paint for the Ferrari 612?

KevinY- I can understand your hesitance in airbrushing bodies. CobraColors is awesome stuff, but it does work best if you've had some expeince with airbrushing. Sooner or later, it will of course be time to try iairbrushing a body, and when that will be is entirely up to you. But before trying CobraColors, at least thoroughly read through all of the tutorials Leon has posted on his CobraColors site. And you will have to get a can of good automotive laquer thinner- don't try using them without it.

As for matching with TS, obviously it's going to be impossible to get a parfect match, but you cn get something close. As BVC500 mentioned, blues can be particullarly difficult to match, as they often change their appearence alot based on lighting conditions. If you're trying to match Blu Mirabeau with TS, I might recommend TS-54 light blue metallic. It's the color tamiya recommends for matching the blue metallic in their Alpine Renault kit:

May not be exact, but it's probably close.

TS53 - Light Met Blue is definitely the closest match in Tamiya paint.

Re: Which Blue Paint for the Ferrari 612?

I finally decided on the Rubino Pearl Red from Cobra Colors. I just ordered the paint, the 612, and also a Badger 175. My old Bagder 350's needle got messed up and instead of getting a new needle I decided to get a more decent airbrush since I plan to take this hobby seriosly. Damn it! I can't stop spending money. Damn this hobby. Damn this forum

The color should look like this:

Re: Which Blue Paint for the Ferrari 612?

Ah, so you've decided to jump in with both feet, then. Good on you.

Take it easy and learn to use the new airbrush. You cna do some amazing things with a dual action, and it can give you much more control than you've lekely ever imagined- but it takes some learning. You might want to play wiht it a bit before starting with the CobraColors.

Speaking of CobraColors, I hope you ordered some MoonMud and Clear Gloss, too. You will need both. If not, fire off an email to Leon, and have him add some- he tends to be very accomidating. As I said, you will need a can of good laquer thinner to use the CobraColors- find where you can get it by following the PPG locator link from Leon's FAQ's.

And don't worry too much about the expense. Once you've laid out for a good airbrush and compressor, buying a couple of kits per year and some paint is really pretty cheap. It's one of the cheapest things I do for fun. If you want an expensive hobby, try rotary wing aviation!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
