Differancial Problem? Help. . . .
I posted this in "general" then I saw this is where it belonged:
Hey guys. . . Im new to the forum. I have a 1996 Camaro that I bought for 1400 bucks with 193k miles. It didnt turn on and had it towed to my home. I found out the engine needed to be completely rebuilt and I did that. It ran good for a while then I lost complete control and hydroplaned into a sidewalk. Spindle messed up with no body damage. I replaced all 4 tires and NOW i hear a funny noise that was not there before. Problem: Its a 5-spd and when I drive above 40 mph i hear a screeching noise on and off. Its not too loud but noticeable. Someone told me its the differencial that might need replacing or just the something in it. . . cant remember the name exactly. Can anyone help me out and confirm this? |

A high pitched screeching just sometimes sounds like the wear indicators on one of the break pads, check them out.

Not the break pads . . ive checked that. Im almost positive its comming from the rear end, because it only happens when at 40mph+

Check the wheel beerings. Also, different tread styles can cause different noises. Go back where you bought them and have them double check the balancing.
Ive never heard of a diff causing a screech unless it was tweaked or something...when you hit the curb, did you hit a front tire or a rear tire? |

I hit the front right tire. If it where the wheel bearings. . . any estimate of cost to repair?

You can do it yourself...I did mine a couple years ago and I cant remember if the parts were 30 or 50 bucks combined... Its no big deal...do both front wheels at the same time...
