Familar new Noise, plz help!
The Noise:
I have heard this noise before when in 4lo shifting into 4x4 full time, that grinding noise if anyone else is familar with it, coming from the transfer case would be my guess. How it started: Started towing a small boat for the weekend trip(first time towing since i owned it 1yr+) Everything worked fine, until i got out and went to the gas station (30 miles or so) and heard a funny noise! So i took it back home and swapped cars. The grinding noise can barely be heard inside but when outside you can hear it a little bit until you step on the gas then it gets louder. It didn't drive funny at all and since the noise couldn't be heard inside the car i don't know when it started(of course it started after i towed the boat) my tranny occasionally slips from 1-2nd but almost unnoticeable! That is my problem just wondering if anyone can help me out before i take it to a mechanic, a "rebuilt" tranny was supposedly put in before i bought it. So my question is tranny or transfer case problem?

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
UPDATE: Just test drove car, and the ticking noise seems to be comming from oil pan area. When it gear it ticks slightly but while driving doesn't make a sound. Still do not notice any issues driving but will get a more detailed understanding tomorrow! ANY ADVICE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
Do you notice any binding when in turns?
Any more info? I understand it's making a grinding noise, but have you tried shifting in and out of 4wd?

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
I haven't tried shifting it out of 4wd hi, and when turning i do not notice anything different. In nuetral it doesn't make a sound, but in gear or park its a slight ticking sound, and when i touch the gas it gets a little louder then stops while the vehicle is in motion. I know its hard to explain the sound, but its the same sound i heard when i was in 4lo and tried to shift it back in 4hi and it made that somewhat grinding sound.(i did that when i first got the jeep 1yr ago) The other thing was i have had a low coolant level on my VIC and when i checked oil it was at the add line, so i added more oil. but the sound is still there.... other than the sound i do not notice any issues, but i know i cannot drive it like this....

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
So it makes the tic-tic-tic sound at idle but not when in motion?

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
Possible shift linkage is out of adjustment and the case is between gears, just enough to make a slight grind. Shifting in and out of 4 hi might work it out. If it does, I would adjust or have it adjusted. Since the tranny was replaced its likely the transfer case was'nt adjusted right when it got put back in.

Re: Familar new Noise, plz help!
I actually tried shifting in and out and still to no avail. Today i managed to get under there and have someone step on the gas slightly, the sounds seems to be coming from the transmission, and now that i think about it i think its the torque converter. Tomorrow im taking it in to get aamco to get diagnosed to pin point the issue....
