2002 Transmission gears

Hey guys I am just trying to help a friend out. He has a 2002 WRX that has blown out 1st gear. He is looking to upgrade his gear but is having a hard time finding anyone that sells gears. Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance.

Re: 2002 Transmission gears

Well he just got his car tuned and was at about 350 hp at the crank and before he got the car it had a blown motor because the kid that had it before was squeezing in it all the time. When he bought it he pulled the stock 2.0 block and swapped in an STi 2.5 block and upgraded the turbo to a VF24 I think along with all the supporting mods. And so the other day he was just driving it normal and wasnt getting on it at all and it didnt want to go anywhere and heard a bad grinding everytime he pushed the clutch in. We pulled the tranny both 1st gears were missing a lot of teeth one didnt even have any left.

Re: 2002 Transmission gears

I don't know what sourcing gears is like in the USA but...

The best would be to replace gears 1-4 with strengthened gears, cos with 350hp he's gonna be breaking the rest as well.

The other option is to rip the 6 speed from an STi (pretty much bulletproof)....that should be easier as the STi's have been in your market for a while now.

I think both options with labour taken into account should cost around the same with the 6 speed option the more expensive one.

Re: 2002 Transmission gears

Yes, get a 6-speed STi tranny to match...

or you could replace the gears with an RA gear set.
