Timing

Hello
I have a 95 Blazer 4.3 W engine code. It is OBD I and has the HEI ignition with the 16 pin test connector inside.
I changed the CPI but I did not mark the position of the distributor when I removed it. It is now running a little off time as it pings a little under acceleration. The manual states to time it to 0 Deg TDC but I can’t seem to find the mark. The only place to look is from the drivers side but I do not see any mark stamped on the front cover.
Is there another way to time it or am I missing something?
Thanks, LS

Re: Timing

The mark should be there, you might have to clean the motor up a little.
Plus you'll want to clean the area where the timing mark is on the harmonic balancer. There might be as many as 4 marks on your harmonic balancer, so you might want to clean up all 4. Don't worry the 3 un-used ones won't mess you up. You won't be able to see them while it's running

Re: Timing

OK, thanks. I’ll go out there and go over it. The only place I am able to get a line of sight on the harmonic balancer is from the drivers side and about a half inch area. I’ll look for the timing marks. I had to remove the distributor as I replaced the lower manifold gasket also.
Thanks for the reply, LS

Also you need to disconect the Tan and black EST connector to base time it.
Look for it about 4 inches from the VCM.

Re: Timing

When I did the timnjg on my 89 Blazer I could see the tdc line on the pulley wheel and some other marks. I managed to get a brass brish down there and clean up the marks. They were easy to read then. There was the TDC mark and several more lines showing varying degrees of engine advance. Guessing 4 8 and 16 degrees BTDC. It was something like that. The only problem I had was to get the timing mark to show in the limited range of visibility with the engine running and the EST wire disconnected. I got it spot on in the end.
