VSS Help

My 98 EJ8 is reading a code 17, vehicle speed sensor short. This is weird because my speedometer is correctly working. I also noticed my v-tec is not coming on. Make any sense?

Re: VSS Help

Well i personally havn't delt with this code, but i can give you some info. The speedo runs off the same circuit as the alternator so if that goes you're pretty much screwed for driving around. Now in your case its something that's going into the ECU which is causing Vtec not to work. I would say check your fuse's and if thats not it, pick up a haynes manual and trace the wires because something may be shorting out. I don't know about where you're located, but up here in the northwest the library has both chilton and haynes manuals so try and check them out to figure this problem out. Sorry i couldn't pin-point the problem for you

Re: VSS Help

Yeah, everything seems to be running fine except for when the v-tec should be kicking in. I'll have to check the fuses as you said. Also, why would both of these things happen at the same time. Is it the speed sensor fault for not telling the v-tec to work? Or the other way around?

Re: VSS Help

well for vtec to work you have to be going over 25mph or something like that. It keeps vtec from working when you're in netural free-reving the engine. So the speed sensor, or something between the speed sensor and the ECU, is keeping vtec from working. But hopefully its something as simple as a fuse.

Re: VSS Help

Thats my fault. My vtec IS working. I actually have a lamp to let me know when it kicks in, and it wasn't coming on yesterday, even though I had it fully warmed up. So that's not a problem then.

Re: VSS Help

if vtec does not work, your cel will tell you so. as far as the cel 17 goes. the problem lies in the sensor, the wiring, or the ecu.
