Don't "skimp" when you buy rocker arms!

Like I did when I bought rocker arms for my new motor a couple months ago. Last night made the 2nd broke rocker arm for me and my 383 . It didnt cost me a race this time though (other guy redlighted-that was the only thing that save me though considering I ran 4.67 on a 4.47 dial, lol).

We fixed it (number 4 intake I think) and I wound up racing the same car (well truck actually, lol, race S-10, had a 640 ci BBC WOW!) and beat him again. And just like the first round, it was all him losing and not me winning! He jumped through the lights and got the big automatic red light! I wound up running a 4.41 on a 4.47 dial.

I went out the next round but came oh so close to a perfect run! Dialed a 4.42 (different lane then the 4.41 pass), had redlighted it away with a .499 reaction time (.500 is perfect here) and went dead on with a zero (4.420)! What makes it hurt so bad is I had took .002 seconds out of my delay box just before I pulled on the track, lol. So had I left it alone, I would have cut a .501 light and won, and been garunteed the buy run which would have put me down to 3 cars, whew! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20.

Anyways, my point of this post is to not skimp on vital parts, or any parts for that matter. My thinking was an alluminum roller rocker is an alluminum roller rocker, so I bought the Proform 1.6 ratio rockers for $147 and some change (that and I have a Proform carb, and it is a good one). That sounded a lot better then $300 or $400 at the time, especially after dropping about $5000 on the new motor! Now, after 2 broke rocker arms, I've changed my tune! Apparently, a rocker aint a rocker, lol and a .660 lift cam and big valve springs prove that. So I ordered some Crane Gold Race Extruded aluminum wide body 1.6 ratio roller rockers, $419.99. They're supposed to be the best of the best.

You live and learn I guess. I shoudl have got them the first go around. Would have saved me $150 and some headache.

Sounds awesome... minus the part of you breaking shit, stop doing that, that's just not kosher.

But everything else is sweet, you're doing a damn fine job!

You got any pictures of that S10? 640 ci, that's like 10.5 liters

Congrats on your almost perfect run. Have you ever had one of those yet?

Well that sucks man but as you said you learn from your mistakes. But doing what you do, your bound to break shit every now then....just the nature of the game.

nuh uh..matty explained what they are to me now. they're these movey rods in the engine that move and then they might touch a camshaft..w/e that is but they do that and they move and regulate how much air or fuel goes into the engine to do something.

he did a really good job of explaining it, but i'm pretty much car illiterate.

No and no, lol. The S-10 was awesome though. I think the guy that was driving just had bought the truck or just had started driving or something. Anyways, they had it tuned way down. He was only dialed a 4.14 against me, which is pretty fast, but not considering he had a 640 BBC. I think the truck has run 5.40s before in the 1/8th though.

And I've came that close to a perfect run on the other side of the tree before, but never had a perfect light and dead on with a zero. I've been dead on with a zero several times and I've had perfect lights several times, but never together, lol. The time I came that close before was either a .501 light and dead on with a zero or a .500 light and dead on with a 1. I remember also cuttin a .502 light once and going dead on with a zero.

Some tracks call going dead on your dial with a zero a perfect run.

Oh yes. There's all the time something going on with a race car. If it aint an oil leak, its leaking water. If it ain't leaking water, its leaking transmission fluid, and so on and so forth.

Speaking of oil leaks, I think we finally have stopped my oil leak, lol. It was leaking oil at the back of the intake. After changing intake gaskets twiced, and adding BUNCHES of permatex, we finally got it stopped.

Yes it did! And what makes it even worse is I ALMOST added back .001 to my delay box. I thought about it and thought about it before I staged and talked myself out of it!

My new rocker arms (along with a fuel filter) will be in Thursday. Going to change oil this week too. I like to change it ever 2 or 3 weekends. So yeah, I probably change oil ever 5 or 10 miles, lol, if that, lol.

Lol. And so now you know, sort of lol.
