Boosting my horsepower?

I have an 01 3.8L V6 and am interested in making her faster. What are some cheaper mods that will allow me to gain some horsepower?

eh, if your looking for a power house you should just sell it while its in good condition and get a v8 other wise you will more then likley waste your gas and money on that v6 but thats my 2 cents

But if your stuck on that v6 and like it a lot i would just go with a good intake a undrive pulley better exhuast and a good tune up...

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

All the same tricks that work on the V8's work on the V6's. There is a free flowing exhaust, Cold air intake, cam's, shift kits, gears, definetly scrap that heavy 2 piece Driveshaft for a Light weight aluminum one. The 3.8's have alot of potential.

To each there own. The GN and TTA both did just fine competing without those 2 extra cylinders.

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

Also. I would love to get a magnaflow catback but its so damn expensive for me(Only 17) I was wondering if the magnaflow tips are any good? Do they give you any type of sound like the catback or just basically for looks? How do you put those tips on a firebird? Thanks!

Also heres a pic of my baby..in my hands for almost 3 months

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

not enough cash? get a job man! I'm 17 and I bought my TA w/ 6 grand that I saved up..but that's besides the point..about the tips, I know my car has stock exhaust but it does have two custom 3" inch pipes welded on the back that replace the stock ones and they do a good job of resonating the stock sound and making it much louder..

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

Yeah i have a job but trying to save up but 600 bucks is a lot. Are magnaflows really worth 550 plus installation? I make around 600 a month and about 275 goes to my car a month. You got a damn good deal on your TA. My firebird cost me 12,500. 30,000 miles, 2001, leather interior and only 1 previous non smoking owner. How exactly would i go about removing the stock exhaust pipes and replacing it with some chrome tips?

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

Ebay is your friend. I am sure you can find a nice Cat back for a decent price there.

just tips alone really aren't gonna do anything for the sound of your car. if you just care about sound and not performance you can get a muffler for around $100 i think. a cutout is always an option too which will net you a small performance gain,, not sure how that sounds on a v6 tho.

Re: Boosting my horsepower?

Trust me man, just getting tips alone aren't worth the money. My suggestion, do what I did and save your money up until you can afford to get a new cat-back exhaust. Magnaflow if definately a good choice to go with and sounds great on the 3.8's. Not to mention it's reasonably priced too.

I see you live near Tampa.. One of the members on this site, DJ or philly rs as he known here (speaking of.. where has he been?) works at a shop down in Tampa called RevExtreme. They specialize on F-body's and do awesome work that you can trust. If you're plan on being in Tampa any time soon, I would suggest you stop by and check them out, just let me know and I'll give you their address.

And if you're really wanting to get some more power, then i would even more so highly suggest you stop at that shop. The guy DJ I mentioned built up a very mean 3.8, so he could definately point you in the right direction. But, if you're more of a do it yourself guy, as I am, then check out this site here. www.ftpp.net. Lots of aftermarket parts for the 3.8's.

have you thought about flowmaster? i had the cat-back exhaust w/ the dual outlet 40-series put on my 3.4 v6 grand am and it sounded pretty beastly for a 6cyl,, and the guys at the shop provided the piping and did the installation for only $300.

and you could def get an ls1 trans am for $12,500 if you wanted to sell the 3.8
