95 cougar shifting problem

Grandfather has a 95 cougar that has always been taken care of very well, but lately while going down road @ 55-60 mph transmission will down shift like it is going up a hill. This will happen going on a flat road or going down a hill. My question is " does cougars have a module for shifting or is it vacuum? I don't know much about Mercury so any help will be nice. Thanks....John

Re: 95 cougar shifting problem

Doubt this is whats wrong with yours but I have a 91' with a 3.8 engine and off the throttle body the top lever I think is controled by the gas pedal. Below that is a cable connected to the bottom of the throttle body and I think this is controls smooth shifting, anyway it goes to the transmision. It had came unhooked and caused various shifting problems. I replaced the thing that connects it and the transmision works fine now.

Smile Re: 95 cougar shifting problem

change the "range sensor" that used to be called manual lever position sensor. it's located where the cable attaches to the shift lever on the left side of tranny, it has a electrical connector plugged into it. that will fix problem, had the same problem.
