I had too much oil in the engine, about 1.5 qts probably. Anyway i drove about 200 miles with the excess oil. after realizing the level was way high(due to strange tapping noise) I had the oil changed. After the oil change I noticed a another noise coming from the engine, this one was distinct. At lower speeds while coasting(anywhere from 5mph- 35mph) i can hear almost a scraping noise. Its not constant but intermintent. I was able to drive the c car home, about 180 miles w/ out problems- no check engine light or over heating etc. I assume the engine is gone at this point but is it possible that only some of the seals were damaged. Probably doesn't matter but I did just have the front bearings repacked 800 miles ago-1 week for me. I will bring it into the shop on tuesday but would love to know if theres a chance in hell it's not a blown engine. Thanks!!

Re: Too much oil
I wouldn't *think* that it would cause a blown engine; when I first moved back to Denver, BigOTire did an oil change for me, we were real busy and all my tools were still in Vegas, NV. Anyhow, they had overfilled my truck by almost 2 qts, meaning they had roughly 8 qts in an almost 6 qt sump.
Stupid me, never thought to double check the level till almost a week, and 1k miles later, after we arrived in Vegas to pick up our last load - truck had been spinning at 4k rpm's for almost 5hrs climbing through the rockies, then doing 70mph thru Utah/Nevada for the remaining 6-7hrs. That was 5yrs and 86k miles ago; truck still runs like a dream - it DID however, begin weeping through the valve cover gaskets shortly after that, but that was it. No other gaskets/seals were replaced due to leaking. I have the 3.2L sohc engine, but the engine itself is not much different then the one you have. Did you double check your oil level? I'm assuming a shop changed it for you.

Re: Too much oil
Thanks for the info. Your story gives me hope! The thing that scares me is the "scraping" noise. It didn't start till after the oil was changed-fixing the overflow issue- I've tried not to drive it too much until I get it looked at, but maybe driving won't cause more damage than is already done. Thanks again!

Re: Too much oil
I'd also doubt there is any damge. If there is though, there is nothing they can do about it by looking at it. If it drives, it is not blown. The noise could be as simple as a heat shield. My Rodeo maks all kinds of noises. Take it in if it makes you feel comfortable, but don't let the shop scam you. Report back with what they say.

Re: Too much oil
There is no way to know if there's internal damage without taking the engine apart. You can probably count on some areas not getting full lubrication at that time, due to the oil probably frothing rather then lubricating, but there's nothing you can do about it now, unless you want to take a part and rebuild.
Where's this Scraping sound coming from, what part of the engine are you hearing it at?

Re: Too much oil
Bad TIRE! Of all things, never would have guessed it. The tire was about to bust open & the steel belts were rubbing against the pavement. I guess I was just expecting the worst, just a coencidence that i noticed it after the overfill . I am amazed that it was the tire! Thank for the responses.
