Why the hell are o2 sensors so damn expensive?

Somehow I ran something big over without realizing it. It ripped off my o2 sensor wire and pretty much fucked the o2 sensor, so I got a CEL. Ran it to my local mechanic who I trust to do things correctly (Chrysler dealer, not Mitsu) and he ran the code. Told me it was the o2 sensor (didn't say which one, but I sorta knew it was the secondary because I could see the wire hanging).

The best price I can find for an OEM secondary o2 sensor is $147 shipped. The Chrysler dealer wants to charge me $175 for the damn secondary o2 sensor shipped in from Mitsu, and my understanding is that this thing dosn't do shit anyways, it just makes sure the cat. converter is working properly. WTF? The one I'm talking about is the one right after the cat that runs up through the car somewhere under the driver seat, I'm pretty sure that was the secondary and not the primary? (somebody please tell me I'm right)

WHY ARE THESE SO GOD DAMN EXPENSIVE? What makes them so special? I realize the primary is important for proper A/F and whatnot, but why make the secondary the same price if it does practically nothing?

Sorry to vent but I just feel like Mitsu is raping me on this, and I don't bend over without atleast a little bit of a rant.

I think ebcause your getting ripped off... Goto autozone. I just checked for a 99 gs for the second o2 sensor after the cat it's 80 bucks

Why do you need to run OEM? They all work the same, just pick one up at Vatozone or Checker or Napa or something.

I mean if you look at the sensor and it's still good and the wiring is bad, why not just rewire it?

I have no idea if the sensor is still good or not, and I wouldn't know how to rewire it. I just want this thing taken care of and to work. My car repair knowledge is limited.

I didn't realize that aftermarket o2 sensors did as good of a job as OEM, and the nearest autozone is an hour away so I haven't bothered to look. I hate napa and carquest, around here they are run by complete douche bags and I refuse to give them my money.

I just checked autozone online and the Bosch one picked out by nova looks good to me, and it will be just as good as OEM? Shit for $80 I'm happy. Thanks guys.

First place I looked. Didn't find any OEM ones, found a few knock offs but wasn't sure if I could trust them or not.

Re: Why the hell are o2 sensors so damn expensive?

I wouldn't trust getting something like that over Ebay, but again the second sensor doesn't do a whole lot. I'd just got with the $80 one that you found. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Why the hell are o2 sensors so damn expensive?

the 80 dollar one should work. Usually you can just match up the wires and connect with some butt splices and you should be good to go. Not much knowledge needed. I had bought a front sensor for my spyder gs and the colors didn't match up right but when you read the eclipse manual (if you need the pages let me know) and read the descriptions that came with teh sensor for the wires it made sense and worked fine.

Hope it works out well for you. No need to get OEM on anything small like that really. The replacements are designed to take place of the OEM stuff and funciton the same. So you can usualy just buy parts from autozone for stuff like that.

lol it's $100 cheaper than the OEM one...I have no problem forking out the $80 as long as it does just as good of a job, and I trust it will if you guys say so.

Holy hell, that might be a record. I HOPE that's not the original motor, and if it is then it should be put in a museum.
