Blazer Now Idles Rough.

Here's whats going on:
95 Chevy Blazer is now sputtering when initially starting up and idles very rough.

The Story:

When exiting the freeway, we unfortunately made an abrupt stop at the stop sign...slammed on brakes. After that incident, the engine starting to sputter and just about died. Then following this, the "service engine soon" light turned on. Every now and then the light would turn on, but the engine remains to idle really rough. To me it sounds like its misfiring. But why would this happen if all we did was brake hard? Or could it be something else?

Any Ideas?

And another thing, the driver pumped the brake just sitting at a light and the pedal would actually tighten to a point that you couldn't press the pedal at all.

Stumped.

really cant help until you have the codes from the engine light. most parts stores will recover them for you for free. but i agree with overboard, it sounds like a vacuum leak.

Re: Blazer Now Idles Rough.

EGR valve has some carbon in it.

Remove, clean out the carbon chunk and reinstall with a new EGR gasket and then reset the computer.

Re: Blazer Now Idles Rough.

Agreed, if you have a body/ECM code of "42" stored, it will most likely be your EGR stuck open partially. No need to replace anything but the "silver" metallic gasket when you remove it to clean the pintle and bore on the unit. REPLACE, do not re-use the old gasket. Do not use any dressing or sealant material in conjunction with the gasket. Wipe down the sealing faces of the metallic parts and the block with acetone on a rag to ensure a tight seal. Be careful NOT to cross-thread the bolts when you put this unit back on, as it is in a very akward spot.
