Question new problem.. power steering?

You might remember me, I was the one wil the 1996 eagle talon ESI (non turb0, 4 -cyl, 2.0 L) that was having the stalling problem afew months ago. It turned out to be a falty O2 sensor and a ton of carbon buildup. That's fixed but now it's somehting new.

I know my new issue has to do with the power steering. I start up the car. Fine, Until i turn the wheel. It makes the typical ear piercing screetch associated with a dying PS system.. but the strange thing is, when you look under the hood, the belt actually stops turning when the wheel is moved (moved quite a bit.. as if to turn out of a tight parking space). It only does this for really sharp turns. Is this the pump? A bearing maybe? I'm clueless. Also, it tends to be much worse for the first 5 mins, but get a tad better once the car warms up. It never goes away completely.

Problem #2 may or may not be related. Whenever i move the wheel just a bit (the high pitched squeeking is only during sharper turns.. as to get in/out of a parking space.. the low groan is when i turn the wheel only slightly.) there is a low croaking groan. It's only when i move the wheel slightly in one direction or another. It sounds like a dying rinocerous, just a loud deap creaking noise. It dosen't seem to affect the proformance of the turns, it's just very loud and grating. The powe steering well is full, and there are no leaks in the system. I don't know what it could be.

Any ideas? These two are likely related, i'm thinking. Symptom #1 started first, then symptom #2 came afew weeks later. I would appriciate any advice or where i should start with this.

Thanks so much!

Replace your power steering pump. If you turn the wheel and the pulley is seized that is a good indication that the pump is done.

Re: new problem.. power steering?

The pump probably ran dry and locked up, or just locked up, which is causing your problem. Replace the PS pump.

Re: new problem.. power steering?

The belt stops turning when you turn the wheel sharply because it creates a load on the pump. Your best bet it to fix the first problem with a new power steering pump (and belt, cause that belt has been seeing too much friction!) and hope that also solves the groaning problem.
