Need some assistance in replacing the LH valve cover.
1. Is a gasket sealant needed between the block and gasket? If so, recommendations? 2. Is a gasket sealant needed between the valve cover and the gastet? 3. What torque should the bolts be tightened? I've heard 7-10 ft-lbs. thanks for the help |

Re: LH valve cover replacement
No sealant is needed and the torque is right (7-10ft lbs). Too much torque screws up the gasket. Make sure you tighten each a little at a time, not all at once.

Re: LH valve cover replacement
Some of the aftermarket gaskets are cork material (Felpro?). These can easily get out of place during installation. Per the Haynes manual (at least in the Bronco manual) they suggest the following to keep the cork in position:
1. Apply a bead of sensor safe RTV to the valve cover. 2. While the cover is upside down, insert the cork gasket into the RTV bead. To hold gasket in place during RTV setting, insert the bolts loosely "the wrong way" through the gasket and cover. 3. Do not apply any sealer between gasket and heads. |
