Milage increase?

i have a 94 SL1. supposedly my car is not rated for great milage. ive already changed my map sensor and coolant temp sensor. what else could i replace and/or fix that would have any effect on my milage. fyi, my odometer doesnt work so im not sure how many miles im getting. im basing this offa how long a full tank lasts.

Re: Milage increase?

you will never know if you increase mileage that way.

but there isnt much you can do other then, plugs and wires upkeep. change oil regularly, clean throttle body, always have clean air filter, keep tire pressure inflated properly, make sure brakes arent scraping, replace exhaust if old (catalytic converter back). just constant upkeep of the car

Re: Milage increase?

ive already changed the plugs and wires when i got the car back in march. i do change my oil regulary with high grade oil plus stabilizer and injection cleaner. how do i clean the throttle body? just put in a brand new air filter back in march. not sure if tires are properly inflated. just replaced the brakes so those should be fine. it still has all stock parts. what will replacing the catalytic converter on back do? if i do that i might as well just replace the heads and the entire exhaust piping, right?

Re: Milage increase?

A 94 SL1 should easily get 30mpg city and close to or better than 40 highway. My neighbors have that same car and they told me they got 43 mpg on their last long trip. Also, the thing only hold 10 gallons and shows empty after using 8 of it.

Re: Milage increase?

im pretty sure my guage is reading right. when it says empty i fill up with about 8-9 gallons. how bad of a toll would the fuel filter have on this? i think its still the stock piece from 94. any other suggestions?

Re: Milage increase?

if exhaust is stock, and has miles on the car, then replacing the exhaust from the catalytic converter back can bring it back to life. this could possibly mean and increase in gas mileage, better yet can improve power. not saying you need to like go performance, just replacement. that can possibly help, but can get pricy but it helps the motor.

Re: Milage increase?

no exhaust manifold can stay as with the downpipe with flex pipe. just the catalytic converter and everything back from there.

now depending on how old the fuel filter is, it can make a difference. if you replace it, dump the fuel out of the old one. then try and blow through it in the direction it flows. if its pretty easy, then the filter was okay, if it was tough for air to go through or practically non came through then it needed replaced.

Re: Milage increase?

i think you are geting a little off track confusing power upgrades and economy upgrade, which a cast manifold is better for effincey/emissions due to charitioristics of heat transfer(IMHO). the frist step to a clean running engine is a tune-up(including fuel filter) and fixing any problems with the engine(SES light on?) this won't net you a huge increase in economy, but it is the required base before other modifications.
