Mazda engine help!
Hey all, its my first time here! I've got quit a bit of questions to shoot at ya.1. What are the differences between the 2.2 and the 2.6L? I ask this because, I have a mazda b2200. But, the water pump is going out on it. I went to an auto place today, and the pump was not the same as the one in my truck. The guy told me I have a 2.6L in there. The water pump in my truck attaches to the fan and is driven by a belt with a big pulley. The one that the guy showed me does not even have an attachment for the fan! 2. Could it be possible that whoever replaced the water pump interchanged it with a 2.6L pump? 3. The truck also has 170,000 miles on it; Even though it really is based on how well the truck has been taken care of, is this a high mileage for a mazda truck? 4. What gaskets seem to go out more than usual on these trucks? 5. I also seem to have alot of oil everywhere... I opened up my air cleaner housing and there was a large build up of oil and dirt chunks. It also appears that there is fresh oil everywhere; on the engine, undercarriage, and ground! I'm pretty new to engines and maintenance, what should I look for in these trucks? Thanks for all your help guys! |

Re: Mazda engine help!
I just replaced the water pump on my 87 B2200 with a timing belt, and the water pump is driven by the timing belt, what I thought was the water pump to start with, was just a big cooling fan idler pulley it just holds the fan in place and the alternator bolts to it see my post 87 B2200 oil pump thats what I thought my actual water pump was thats what the repair manual called it I havent owned a B2600 though but my little B2200 truck has 244,000 miles on it but I just recently had to replace the Rings radiator and some work had been done when I bought it but pound for pound I had an 87 Toyota 22r truck and I wouldnt trade my mazda for two of them.

Re: Mazda engine help!
A Mazda B2200 engine is single overhead cam, 2.2 liters in dispalcement, can be carbed or some are fuel injected. A B2600 engine is actually a Mitsubishi engine installed in Mazda B2600 trucks in 1987 and 1988. They were carbed and a pile of junk. The Mazda B2600i engines from 1989 to 1993 were all fuel injected and 2.6 liters in displacement. They were graet engines. The only gasket known to give trouble in Mazdas is the head gasket. 170,000 miles is nothing on a well maintained B2200. I would get some Gunk engine cleaner and clean the oil off your engine.Dont spray water directly on your distributer. I would bet that your valve cover gasket is leaking and it is very easy to replace and very inexppensive. Change your PCV valve on top of the valve cover, tune the truck up (also very easy) clean the crud out uf your air cleaner and replace the air cleaner element and you should be good to go. BJ

Re: Mazda engine help!
Bump. The water pump for a B2600i motor and a B2200 motor are not interchangeable. They are totally different engines.Spend 15 bucks foe a Haynes repair manual for your truck . Will make maintenance very easy for you. BJ

Re: Mazda engine help!
The engine is indeed a 2.2L. The idler fan pulley had me thinking it was apart of the water pump, too. I don't think this engine has been maintained very well... Haha cause it seems like it is running like shit! The truck is going into a shop for a performance analysis and oil change. Hopefully they will tell me everything I need to know about the engine... From what my brother says, the head gasket is hell to replace on these engines. I have a chilton's manual for the truck.
I replaced the air filter with a K&N and also replaced the breather element. The PCV valve was also replaced. I had to fill the engine up with 2 quarts of oil since the oil did'nt even read on the dipstick! The water pump was fine, and my brother said that it looks like it was replaced recently. We replaced the gaskets on the water pump and the assembly above it. Then we re-assembled the engine and made sure all the belts were tight, adjusted the timing. We checked the spark plugs and there was a heavy carbon build up. I cranked the engine up and all the engine lights came on and would'nt disappear. Then, a heavy cloud of smoke, which I believe was white, came out of the exhaust. It dissipated after a couple seconds. Then the truck seemed to run fine... The noise also disappeared. But today I showed him what the engine sounded like when I started it up. The engine was at an idle of 500 rpm and I had to keep the throttle on it at 1,500 rpm to keep it from dying. The big cloud of smoke also returned and went away just like previously stated above. We adjusted the distributor again and raised the rpm to a steady 700. All the engine lights also came on, but then disappeared... I moved the truck back, and found a patch of carbon on the gorund, along with a couple oil leaks. The carbon patch seems to originate around the headers. Whats the deal with all of this? Can you guys explain?! |

Re: Mazda engine help!
White smoke from exhaust usually =blown head gasket, blue smoke=bad rings or bad oil seals on valves, black smoke=running too rich or bad carb or fouled plugs. The carbon spot is probably where the head gasket is leaking. BJ

I have an 88 mazda b2200. i replaced the water pump in it and when we started it up you had to floor it in order for it to idle. I knew something was wrong with the timimg so i pulled it all back apart. it jumped about 8 teeth on the belt.. oooooppppppssss. so I put it bakc in time. had every thing lined up where it needed to be. put the belt back on and now the truck wont start. it sounds like it wants to but just wont do it... any one got any ideas cause i really need to get it running again soon!!!!
