My first Camaro!
So im rebuilding my Dodge Stealth R/T TT and I was looking for something to drive for the time being and saw this '94 Camaro, 6cyl, 5spd manual. I've never been all that into Camaros and I cannot stand driving an automatic, so I figured i'd try a Camaro out for the time being, one of the positive notes being I've only seen two Camaros for sale with manual transmissions ever. And I must say this car rides beautifully, much more comfortable than my Stealth.
Anyway, theres one problem with it. When I go to put it in reverse it grinds. Not a lot and not all the time. When I put it in reverse, take it out and put it right back in reverse it never grinds. If' im just sitting it chooses when it wants to grind and when it wants to go right in. Every other gear is fine. Other than that I love it, and love the fun I can have with RWD compared to my AWD.

Re: My first Camaro!
congrats on getting ur first camaro. i had the same issue with my 5speed iroc (same tranny as ur 94). on occasion, it would grind a little going into reverse. then if i tried it again it was fine. i thought it might be a syncro or something out of adjustment but never looked into fixing it. it only happened about once or twice a month and all other gears opporated smoothly.

Re: My first Camaro!
Congrats on the car and welcome to the boards. My guess would be that it is either a bad syncro or somehow it is messed up and isn't going all the way into reverse, possibly a bad linkage (if that is possible, I don't know too much about the trans).

Re: My first Camaro!
Welcome. Usually I can't help anyone, but for once I can contribute...
Since I'm currently rebuilding a 4 speed... There are no synchronizers for reverse... they're only for the forward gears (between 1&2, 3&4, etc) and that's because the gears spin loose on the shaft until engaged and the synchronizer is a very cool device that gets you out of one gear, speed the next up to the proper speed to engage without grinding, etc. (This may sound stupid, but manual transmission really are an amazing nice piece of work, when you think about how someone actually figured all that stuff out.) Anyway, the reverse gears get ground when you shift into reverse while still moving (regardless of whether the clutch is in our out) and once they're ground the only way to get rid of the grinding is to get new reverse gears installed. IMO not worth the money or time, since you're more than likely to do it yourself from time to time and wind up in the same spot. So if you get new reverse idler and mainshaft gears installed, make sure you come to a complete stop before shifting into reverse or you just blew a lot of money for nothing.Since you now own a Maro, we'll overlook the Dodge issue..

Re: My first Camaro!
Yeah, the T5 trannys in our f-bodies have pretty lousy shifters, but you could always get an aftermarket shorth-throw shifter that shoud fix the problem.

Re: My first Camaro!
Let me try a different way...
It's NOT the shifter. Your reverse gears are ground (probably not too bad though), and if you happen to be lined up right (it's not that hard to have happen, mine only grinds occasionally) when shifting into reverse it won't grind. This is common with ALL manual transmissions (per local trans shop) and the only thing you can do stop it from happening is to slow down and make sure you come to a COMPLETE STOP BEFORE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE. |

The V8 Manuals came with 6 speeds. If sometime you're bored, you can google the build numbers from 93-02 and add up the numbers to figure out just how many 4th gens came with 5-speeds. It wont be much though, I thinks a good 2/3 of all Camaros came with autos. |
