intake question homemade

I got A question how much thinker or wider is the stock intake tube vs the k&N or any other aftermarket intake setup I ask because I looked at the intake box and the port for the inlet is so small compared to the stock tubing going to the Tb im looking into cuting the box and running tubing to a better location for cooler air here are some pics of what someone else has done

Re: intake question homemade

The best source of forced cool air is from the grille or fender area.
Just do not get it to low and suck water in.
Good luck

It would be easier to get new tubing and elbows and make another intake tube. It doesn't cost much at all. Slowprocess had a super nice setup that he made himself and he said it wasn't expensive and most parts were bought at Lowes/Home Depot.

would they have to the same size as stock?? and it looks like the mafs can only support one size of tubing I could be wrong

If you want to go bigger.
They may make a special racing MAF sensor that is bigger around or that will handle more air flow..

Re: intake question homemade

The aftermarket tubes (from the filter to the TB) I have ever seen up close are all about the same diameter as stock (give or take a hair). Unless you change your TB the mounting would need to be the same as stock anyway. As far as the inlet side (before the filter) for the aftermarket ones that have their own box, I have no idea (depends on the mfr I guess), but for the cone filter style like I have, the only restriction on the inlet is air getting to the semi-enclosed area where the filter sits. On mine, I actually removed the mounting plate for the stock box, so it's just open to the bottom now, into the space between the wheel well and the bumper.

Hopefully this works as a response to your question in the other thread too.

look at these two

one with a box one without would what you did be more like the k&n???? what I want is like above but run duct to the blank where the fog light should be maybe use more for a duel setup back to the stock box can that be to much air for the maf sensor??

Re: intake question homemade

Mine's like the K&N. Volant makes a duct to attach right where you're describing that runs right into that assembly you show in the first pic. You could probably make something similar to force more air to the K&N though. Not sure if the maf would have a problem with too much air or not.

Re: intake question homemade

Hmmm. Not really sure what that is. Pretty sure mine did not have that. Where it attached to the TB was just a bend in the tube right after the hump where it goes over the fan shroud. The TB on the 5.3 is towards the front. I'll look at it again when I get home. Maybe I just didn't notice that connection. So there's nothing hooked up to it? It's just a hole into that box assembly? If air can get in right there, is there a filter on the inside?

Re: intake question homemade

It is just there to reduce the intake air noise.
It is More or less a dead space.
But the hookup where the air pipe goes onto tbi always looks to me like it is restricted.

Re: intake question homemade

Yep, I cut all that extra crap off and plugged the holes. Then went to the hardware store and bought some sched. 80 pipe and made what I needed.
