left axle shaft seal/transmission leak...

So yeah... im doing my best to make this used GT something fast, drivable and good... It just seems as though the problems are endless... I have It at a transmission shop, where they've rebuilt the trans twice now... now they're talking about a bent axle (?! ) so, if anyone has any advice as to getting started again once it is finally done, that woud be great.

Find a new shop

How did you bend an axle? If you don't know, then find a new shop.

Re: left axle shaft seal/transmission leak...

I agree...

I was thinking about it and realise axles don't usually bend... They break. Axles are designed to undergo torsion which means the shaft has to be more hard (rigid) then ductile (flexible) and unless you managed to overheat the shaft (like had the car over a fire) it will not bend.

The only this I have seen is if you torqued the teeth holding the shaft in place, but you would have needed to have had something seize the wheel all of a sudden while moving at a pretty good speed or somthing hit the car while it was in gear (something big... Like another car).

Re: left axle shaft seal/transmission leak...

i've seen axle shafts bend. i once worked in a full service reputable auto repair shop, and a grand cherokee 4WD came in. one of its rear wheels had bad bad curb rash, and consequently, that wheels axle was bent. we could see it be remove the wheel and spinning the axle, and it did not rotate about its normal axis, but had a noticeable wobble.

so unless you nailed a curb really hard, i'm with Igovert and 2old: it is very hard to bend an axle. if they say its bent, let them show you proof.
