Liftgate locking mechanism snafu - 1999 T&C
The locking mechanism on the liftgate of my 1999 T&C went kablooey the other day. When I locked or unlocked the doors using the key fob, a sort of grinding noise could be heard; it also made the same noise when the locks automatically engaged after first starting the engine and getting up to the 10 or 15 mph mark. The liftgate was stuck in the locked position, and when I tried to use the key, rather than the key fob, to unlock it, I found that it, too, was kablooey...the key spins aimlessly without catching anything to unlock the liftgate. So I climbed into the back of the van, screwed around with the little round access hole above the latch until I could unlock and finally open the liftgate. I then removed the plastic cover so I could try and find out what the hell was making that noise, and hopefully fix it. Whatever the doohickey is that controls the lock via the key fob is broke...I was able to figure out that much. But I can't seem to get to the area that's controlled by the actual key, so I don't know what's wrong there. I also don't know how to completely remove the remote doohickey so that I could replace it when I figure out where to buy a new one. The bolts holding it in place must be a funky size or something, because I tore apart my husband's tool box and I just couldn't find a wrench or whatever that's the right size to grab ahold of those bolts.
Any help that anyone could lend regarding any of these little snafu's would be incredibly appreciated. Although it'd be a hoot to see the look on my husband's face when he gets home from work and sees the liftgate all pulled apart, I'd rather have this fixed sooner than later.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
