Re: Speed Limiter?

I have 91 caprice and I have done over 100 mph several times too. I think there is no speed limiter.

Re: Speed Limiter?

Right, the speedometer only goes to 85 but I'm sure the car can go faster. To my knowledge, the only cars that had a "speed limiter" if you would, were the 94-96 non-9c1 Caprice with the LT1. The transmission on the non-9c1 model would downshift at WOT if the car was already going 120 mph (to prevent it from going faster) while the 9c1 model would allow the transmission to remain in 4th to reach its top speed in 130-140 mph range.

Chevy High Performance magazine did a profile last year on a guy with an Impala SS who tops out at 173 mph!

Re: Speed Limiter?

That's 10 MPH faster than my '94 - Which translates to about 30HP. The programmed fuel cutoff on the '94 and '95 Impalas was 254MPH. The cars are drag limited to about 145-ish in factory form.

Earlier ECMs also had a fuel cutoff MPH parameter. Most of the factory programs set the limit at 93 MPH or 118 MPH (the 'P' or 'T' speed rating of the original equipment tires), whereas a few vehicles had the 255/254 cutoff/cut-in settings - Only those with "Z" rated tires (constant speed in excess of 150MPH), like some Camaros, Firebirds, and Corvettes.

All the cars from 94-96 have speed limiters. IIRC, on the civi Caprice its around 108, 9c1s are limited at 147 and the Impalas cut-off at 154.

The transmission does not down shift, the fuel is cutoff The limiter was set to the rating of the tire.

255/254? I sure hope you meant to say 155/154

Re: Speed Limiter?

There is news video from I believe Oklahoma, of a 95 Impala SS being pursued at over 155MPH. I don't have it anymore (was on old computer hard drive that crashed) and I havn't seen it on the web anymore. There is also radio traffic from the news helicopter, that was having trouble keeping up with the car. He was advising his station that he was taking the helicopter into its red zone of operation.

Re: Speed Limiter?

Umm... Umm.. Ummm. Someone had better look at the program hacks for the OBD-I Impala instead of repeating what's been tossed around in chat rooms and forums for so long. I dfon't know about plain Caprice models, or 9C1s, but mine is programmed at 255/254. My older Trans Am is the same, and it came from the factory that way. About everything that I burn a custom PROM for gets the same treatment. Most customers opt to have the original limits raised. If you want to look it over, here's my current binary:

http://72.19.213.157/files/VADR0322-94SS-LT4A.bin

FWIW, most Rangers and Long Rangers have trouble maintaining over 135Kts (about 145 MPH) for very long. Doughnut payload greatly affects airborne performance - Textron doesn't test/qualify them with a few dozen bear claws aboard.

Re: Speed Limiter?

My '84 would go as fast as its horsepower wind and hills allowed.
My '92 has the engine cut out somewhere between 170 and 180 kilometers per hour. I'm guessing because the speedo goes up to 160 kph (100mph, cutoff is guestimated at around 110-115)
I test drove an '9? ex-cop car once and it had an engine cutoff on it too.

Re: Speed Limiter?

I thought (at least with the 700 R4 Tranny) that there was a centrifugal govonor inside that steel dome piece near the tail on the drivers side. I'm probably wrong but I thought almost for sure I remembered reading about that.

Re: Speed Limiter?

There is a governor in the transmission, but this governs transmission line pressure, not engine/car speed. It is there to control shift points and ensure proper apply pressure to the clutches and servos.

Re: Speed Limiter?

Oh, well I guess its a good thing I didn't try to take my neighbor kid's advice and try to disable it . Is that also what keeps the transmission from going into 4th gear at WOT?
